Bowen Faux Bronze Statues

While I was initially uncertain about the statues, upon receiving them - I am duly impressed with how they look. They were already some of Randy's best work, but the faux bronze covering really adds an extra depth (or look) to the statues. Fortunately, I was able to grab two of them; however, if I knew how well they were going to turn out, I would have included thee Spider-Man Faux Bronze as part of the collection.

I know that you still can get your hands on one in the near future (e.g. Odin or Abomination), and I would highly recommend it. In fact, the regular Abomination would be an awesome counter to my existing Juggernaut or Wolverine. I like the idea of having counter designed statues, so that you can actually place them in combative positions.

Finally, the great part about these statue renditions is that Bowen is maintaining a limited edition quantity. I have seen him drastically reducing the edition sizes over the last few years, and as an avid collector, I appreciate it.

Here is the one that I missed out on.

Superman: Secret Origin

Superman's secret origin is being told again, this time by Geoff Johns.

http://www.newsarama.com/comics/110828-Geoff-Secret-Origin.html

This looks interesting. I've been fascinated with the reintroduction of the Legion into Superman's past. I am also interested in how Geoff will handle the Superboy era since DC is no longer using that name due to legal (0r potential legal) reasons.

If I Could Afford It - I Would Own It.

I just like the idea of having the life sized statue standing around the house; however, I don't exactly know where I would put it. Also, the statue has some great detail to it

Each statue is 8'6" tall and weighs over 150 pounds. And while each statue costs $3200.00, you will be charged an additional $1000 - $1500 for shipping and handling.

But - if you have the money and room, I think it would be a cool edition.

Marvel Comics: Previews

Okay. This is more of a geek post than anything else, but I was looking at some of the preview art for Marvel Comics' Kingbreaker, X-Force, and a few others, when I noticed the following banner ad appeared above the preview page.

Kudos to DC for making a solid purchase on their banner advertisement. What a nice way to steal my attention away from the Marvel Comic and into purchasing a DC Video. For that, I am posting a link to purchase the video.

Fables The Covers

OK, I'm not a fan of Fables the beloved series by Bill Willingham and I'm OK with that. Really I am.

However, Fables has the most awesome and beautiful covers of any comic series in recent memory, tied possibly with Umbrella Academy. Fables and Umbrella Academy are covered by fan favorite cover artist James Jean. This book, Fables Covers by James Jean is a collection of his covers. This book is beautiful. It includes a collection of Jean's covers and the preliminary artwork done in preparation of the finished covers.

Run, don't walk, and buy this. Or make with the clicky clicky below.

Web Comics

Anybody recommend any really good web comics? I generally don't follow web comics. Actually, FreakAngels is the first one I've followed regularly. I think part of the reason for that is the non daily nature of it. I used to read pvp, but like so many things, you have to almost read it daily.

So, leave a comment with your recommendations. I'll post the best recommendations here later.

June 2009 Kotobukiya

Kotobukiya has another round of Marvel Comic statue and busts being released in June 2009. While I can not put any of them on my Hot Buy list, I thought that I should at least present them for everyone's review.

The statue is of the New (Bucky) Captain America and looks to be a companion piece to the Winter Soldier Kotobukiya statue scheduled for release in May 2009. On either or - I would pass. These statues simply do not grab my attention. I don't like the faces, and I am not that thrilled with the statue in general. Good concept - just poorly executed.
Rating: Pass

Kotobukiya is releasing three new busts in June 2009 which include Kitty Pryde, Storm, and a Marvel Studios version of the Silver Surfer. While I like the fact that Kitty Pryde is holding Ogun's Hannya Mask and a katana sword (supposedly metal), I dislike her face. One of the first things that I tend to judge in a lot of my statues and busts are the faces. They set the tone and character of the sculpture, and this one does not capture Kitty. It lacks what makes Kitty - Kitty. Despite everything - it should portray some form of innocence. I am not rating a pass on this one; however, I would not place it in a buy either. For me, this one (along with the Silver Surfer) are merely rated Netural. (Your call.)

The only bust from Kotobukiya in the June 2009, which I would buy, would be the Storm Bust. Not necessarily a "Hot Buy", but a but above all of the rest mentioned here today. And the reason that I like the bust - her face. One of the few Storm statues that I have enjoyed as I have always thought that it would be difficult to capture her true facial expressions in a sculpture format - however, Kotobukiya proved me wrong. Her face shows stern determination. The pose issues a gathering of destruction which strikes to the heart of what makes Storm Storm. If you are collecting the Kotobukiya line - than this is one bust that should be included in your collection. Rating: Buy

New Comics for NOVEMBER 19, 2008

HOT BUY: FABLES TP VOL 11 WAR AND PIECES (MR)

I realize that this may not be one of Robert's favorite TPB series; however, it is one of mine. I have consistently enjoyed every book in the series. Start with the first and move from there. I would give solid and consistent B+.

CON: Which is not necessarily a con as much as a reminder, this is definitely a MATURE READER set of TPBs. Don't make the mistake of ignoring this key fact if you want to give it as a gift or one of your kids wants to pick up the TPBs.

DC Solicits for February 2009

OK, a few non trade/graphic novel highlights:

Buy Stack:

BATMAN #686 & DETECTIVE COMICS #853 (It's Neil Gaiman writing Batman again. Yes again.)

BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL #26 (King Tut from the 60's TV show makes his first appearance in comics. And if that's not enough, it's written by Christina Weir and Nunzio DeFilippis. They're a pretty good team. OK, I'm not really going to buy this. I don't even like the thought. Next we'll get Vincent Price's Egghead or whatever his name was, but it's a funny idea.)

BATMAN: GOTHAM AFTER MIDNIGHT #10 (Batman by Steve Niles and Kelley Jones. Nuff Said.)

ACTION COMICS #874 (James Robinson is updating the Mon El story. I've been a Legion of Super Heroes fan since I was a kid. So I'm really enjoying the Legion appearances in the DCU.)

BLACK LIGHTNING: YEAR ONE #3-4 (Art by Cully Hamner. Plus he's one of the coolest DC characters ever. I've liked Black Lightning since the original Batman & The Outsiders.)

R.E.B.E.L.S. #1 (Brainiac's son is back and running from the cosmic police forces of the DCU. Plus it's by Tony Bedard and I really enjoyed his Crossgen work [BOHICA!].)

Pass Stack:

THE OUTSIDERS #15 (I dont' think DC knows what to do with them any more.)

TANGENT: SUPERMAN'S REIGN #12 (Just don't care)

TITANS #10 (Ditto!)

BLUE BEETLE #36 (Final Issue.)

Thought of the day:

I think the DC Universe is the most confusing it's been in 50 years. I'm not even sure who's on which Earth and don't really like the Rainbow Lantern Corps. I'm really not sure what the whole purpose of all of the Crisis series of the last few years is about. And the worst thing is, I don't care enough to figure it out. I'm picking up specific runs on specific books and walking away from many series I used to stick with through think and thin. Geoff Johns writes comics action like no one's business and his love of the Silver Age is second only to Mark Waid, but his Green Lantern revival has left me cold. DC Comics are slowly dropping off my lists one by one.

A few DC Direct Items February 2009

Ame Comi Black Canary - Not so much. This one is a little too Yu Gi Oh for my tastes. I really like most of this series, but a few have been real misses for me. These are starting to get too expensive for what they are though. $55. Pass!

Ame Comi Huntress - This one rocks! I haven't looked too closely at the shoes yet, but I really, really like the Huntress. Hot Buy!

Penguin Black & White Statue based on a Brian Bolland design. The Batman Black & White series is another one that is hit or miss for me. I didn't really like the Joker and I don't like this Penguin. While Brian Bolland is the artists' artist and almost any of his artwork translates well to 3d, this piece doesn't do it for me. I think he just messed his pants. He may be smoking in the boys' room with the Ethan Van Sciver Batman. Or maybe he just needs some Depends. Pass!

Last, but not least, is the DC Direct Darkseid Bust, this is another in the same series as the Hal Jordan bust that Zimm reviewed earlier. While I'm glad they're not jumping right into Superman and Batman, this Darkseid is not one of DC's winners. The face on this one is just plain lifeless. I know he's supposed to look stone like, but he's not supposed to look like he belongs on Mount Rushmore. Pass!

Reviewing DC Trade/GN Solicits for February 2009

I found the list here.

A few highlights:

Trades/Graphic Novels I'm going to buy:

SECRET HISTORY OF THE AUTHORITY: HAWKSMOOR TP (Jack Hawksmoor of the Authority and formerly of Stormwatch is one of my two favorite Wildstorm characters. The only thing that would have made this better would have been if Cully Hamner had done the interiors in addition to the covers.)

BATMAN: HAUNTED GOTHAM TP (Doug Moench & Kelley Jones doing Batman in the DCU)

CHECKMATE: CHIMERA TP (I haven't read any of Jones' Checkmate issues yet, but I really loved the Rucka run, and this is the final trade of the series, so it's on the list. Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but I've bought worse for worse reasons.)

THE WAR THAT TIME FORGOT VOL. 1 TP (It's good so far. I've only read the first couple of issues though.)

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL VOL. 1 TP (If you read DC comics in the mid 80s you read this book. It was the funniest thing going and after Crisis, this book was exactly what we needed.)

SHOWCASE PRESENTS: AMBUSH BUG VOL. 1 TP (It's Keith Giffen doing what he does best. Plain and simple.)

Trades/Graphic Novels I'm not getting:

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN: FOR TOMORROW HC (Mostly because I didn't really enjoy the comics when they came out originally. Yes, the Jim Lee artwork can only look better bigger, but...)

SHAZAM!: THE MONSTER SOCIETY OF EVIL TP (Didn't really strike me as Jeff Smith or Captain Marvel enough for me)

SUPERMAN/BATMAN: ENEMIES AMONG US TP (I've lost all interest in Superman/Batman once it began affecting continuity. Like All Star Superman, it's best when it's in its own little world, doing its own thing. Now it's just another Superman and/or Batman book.)

TEEN TITANS SPOTLIGHT: CYBORG TP (I haven't cared for the Titans after some time during the last series that Devin Grayson began. It was a while after she left the book though. I think it was during Jay Faerber's run and he and the editor were fighting for control of the book.)

Coolest Mighty Muggs Yet

OK, maybe not the coolest, but this is very close to being my favorite of all of the Marvel Mighty Muggs figures. First, the Vision is one of my favorite characters in the DCU. Here he looks like the baby Vision. Who wouldn't want a baby Vision? Plus the Muggs look really cool with capes.

I'm more than a little biased, but I'm calling it a Buy even though Zimm will make fun of me.

Pick 3 Graphic Novels/Trade Paperbacks For This Week

Pick 3 Graphic Novels/Trade Paperbacks For This Week

This is the part where I pick 3 graphic novels/trade paperbacks and give them a grade. You'll probably mostly see B's and C's because I don't normally read books I don't like and I don't really think there are that many out there that you gotta own/read. I'm going to ignore the obvious ones, Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns, although I will probably eventually get around to the sequel to Dark Knight and maybe the Absolute Edition. Also, since I'm randomly selecting these books for review, I'm probably picking books I have at hand, so mostly new books and there are probably more of the ones I like lying around.

This is going to read like a real love fest, as they're all on my B List. Remember in our grading scale, B's mean you should try them out. A's are "You Gotta Own It!".

In no particular order:

1. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - B+ - Alan Moore & Kevin O'Neill have taken several of the classic pulpy and literary characters from the Victorian era and put them together to combat evil. It's the ultimate super hero book of the 19th century. Mina Murray (Harker) from Dracula, Captain Nemo from 20,000 Leagues and Mysterious Island, The Invisible Man, Henry Jekyll & Edward Hyde, and a new character named Campion Bond as a nod to James Bond and Albert Campion, who acts as the team's laison to their mysterious boss M. If you like big adventure books, this is one of the best and by arguably the best writer in the biz. I'm not including the Black Dossier in this list, because it's a different creature with its own story behind it.

The most important thing to keep in mind is, this isn't that wretched movie that claimed to be based on the series. It's not. Not even close.

Also, in (out of print) Absolute Editions, that include Alan Moore scripts:

2. Ex Machina - B - It's a book about a super hero book, that isn't a super hero book. Michell Hudred was the Great Machine, the only super hero in the world and saviour of the second tower on 9/11. Today he's mayor of New York City.

Written by Brian K. Vaughn and with art by Tony Harris.

They're also releasing them as Deluxe Hard Covers. Each one contains two trades and the first one is available now:

3. Y The Last Man - B+ - One day you're a total f*** up and the next you're the hottest guy on the planet...of course you're the only guy on the planet. This series is about a virus that wiped out the male of every mammalian species on the planet, except Yorick Brown and his pet monkey, Ampersand, and Yorick's journey to discover what caused the virus and saved him and Ampersand. Plus, any book with a monkey, especially one named Ampersand can't be all bad. Written by Brian K. Vaughn and art by Pia Guerra.

They're also releasing them as Deluxe Hard Covers. Each one contains two trades and the first one is available now and the second will be available in May:

Both Ex Machina and Y are about geeks that have been thrown into extraordinary circumstances and how they handle those circumstances. BKV, has written several of the best comics in the last decade and many of the best episodes of Lost the last two years.

DC Recommends 30 TPBs

I was clicking around the DC page, looking for a new monitor background image, when I saw this title:
Looking for a shortcut into our Graphic Novels section?
Check out our 30 Essential Graphic Novels page

So, what the hell, I was clicking.

Scrolling down the list, I saw a number of graphic novels that I would recommend and some that I have not even considered. Even Robert's recommended "All-Star Superman."

Edit: Robert: Essential? Hmmm.... I'm not sure Identity Crisis or Green Lantern: Rebirth are essential. Watchmen, Dark Knight, Kingdom Come, Batman: Arkham Asylum maybe. Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again, not so much. I get what they're doing here, but come on.

Sigh!

I'm missing my FreakAngels fix this week. It's another skip week.

If you haven't read it, go to www.freakangels.com and get caught up. Or you can get the TPB of the first act at your local comics shop or on Amazon.

Robot Chicken: Star Wars II

What a way to start the day! Being a huge fan of the Robot Chicken series - this comes as great news. I have the first season on DVD, and I need to pick up the other seasons.

If you have never seen them before, catch a few of their episodes on YouTube, and then buy the DVD.

I was on a flight back from NY or Vegas one time, and the plane was full of sales reps, executives, and other Cartoon Network associates. It was the day after the Big Ten TV special had broken some records for them. Being the geek that I am, I congratulated them on the success and wanted to also mention my enjoyment of Robot Chicken. I was going to lead to how I enjoyed a lot of the other Adult Swim shows as well, when the executive responded, "Robot Chicken does nothing for us."

I am immediately quipped and confused, "What?"

"Everyone just downloads it and posts the episodes on YouTube. It does nothing for our Nielsen Ratings."

At that point, I ended the conversation. I realized that I was dealing with someone who does not understand the "geek universe" or even this generation. We were about the same age, but he does not understand that the Nielsen Ratings may no longer hold a sway over the success of a show, and the success of a show can extend beyond a channel of communication.

I know I digress, but I am glad to see that someone at Cartoon Network gets it.

Bowen Designs: The Kucharek Brothers

The Kucharek Brothers represent one of the primary reasons that Bowen Designs has become the leader in comic book statues and busts. Their ability to consistently capture, design, and sculpt the characters within the Marvel universe never ceases to amaze me.

I continually rank their statues and busts as HOT BUYS, as you can see in my previous recommendations of Nova, Bullseye, and Stealth Iron Man Statue. However, my appreciation for them does not begin and/or stop there. Look at the recent Ronan the Accuser and Gladiator busts, or take the time to look through Bowen's Legacy Sculptors and Busts to truly appreciate their work. Apocalypse, Loki, and (by far one of the all-time best) Nightcrawler statue.

While I can not say that I have always appreciated some of their work (e.g. the wings on the Air-Walker bust), I can say that I always take a close look at what they have created and give it some extensive consideration.

With that said, take a moment to understand and appreciate their work. That way, you will easily spot some hot opportunities like the Sauron Bust that went up yesterday.

Noble Collection

Just got a catalog from them, and I hate catalogs - waste of paper. However, they have some nice stuff that I might consider ordering. Definitely adding to my list of collectible sites to visit.

Ethan Van Sciver Batman Black & White Statue

Again while looking at the new releases list for this week, I ran across a listing for this piece coming out in January.

Is it just me or does it look like he's about to mess himself? Seriously, I think he may have pinched one off in there. I feel sorry for Alfred when Batman gets back to the Batcave and drops this costume one in the batlaundry.

Ethan Van Sciver is a great artist too. I think it's probably just an unfortunate translation from the 2d page to a 3 sculpture. Sometimes, that's just how it goes.

Pros: Not much.

Cons: Facial expression, pose.

Rating: Pass

All-Star Superman

Taking some of Robert's advice, I picked up the All-Star Superman, and while I have enjoyed very few Superman stories, this one tops my list. Once you climb into the story and Morrison's All-Star creation, you start to realize that this is what Superman is all about. This is what made him great, and this is what I hope they find.

In overall grade, I would give this one a B+. Definitely something everyone should read; however, not quite certain if it is required academic reading - so to speak.

Hat's off to Robert, please keep the suggestions coming.

As a reminder: volume one is out in paperback now and the hardback for volume two will be available in February.

Bowen Machine Man Bust

Moving on to the Machine Man bust, I never was the biggest Machine Man fan, but this bust seems pretty lifeless. I know he's supposed to be an android, but he's a living android. And those nostrils. They stick out more than Baby New Year's ears in Rudoph's Happy New Year. For me this is a PASS.

Why does he deserve better than this? My only exposure to Machine man before Next WAVE (by Warren Ellis) was in a Marvel Comics Presents (issue 10 according to www.comicbookdb.com) and in the four issue mini series by Barry Windsor-Smith from the mid 80s (and reprinted as a two issue mini series in the early 90s). But he was pretty cool in those appearances.

A little history: He was the 51st prototype of a series of androids built to server as replacement for humans as soldiers. He was created by Jack Kirby who introduced him in the Marvel adaptation of 2001: A Space Odyssey and given a follow up series shortly after. Unlike the other 50 prototypes, Machine Man was treated as a human by his "father"/creator Abel Stack. Stack even began to have fatherly feelings for his creation and made an artificial skin for him so he could pass as human and named him Machine Man.

Unfortunately, the military had installed self destruct devices in all of the prototypes and in the process for removing Machine Man's Doctor Stack was killed. Machine Man then went on a Fugitive like run while the military searched for him. Like many Kirby projects the plot was ripped right out of whatever he was watching or reading at the moment, but with a Kirby flair.

So does he deserve better than this Bowen bust? I'm not sure. But he looks way cooler on the printed page than he does in this bust.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Jim Aparo Batman Black & White Statue

Im taking a look at the new releases list and I saw two things that interested me. Ill start with one and probably get a post up about the other later today.

I was looking forward to the day they released a Jim Aparo design in the Batman Black & White series and honestly, I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. Jim Aparo was among the best Batman artists ever and one of the longest running artists as well. So of the many, many poses he has done for Batman, why did they choose this piece? It's a nice statue. I just know it could/should have been better.

I'll give it a Neutral.

Pros: It's a Jim Aparo design. His facial expression. His left hand. This is a classic Batman pose. If I hadnt had high expectations, it would probably be a Buy.

Cons: It should be better.

The Fate of Heroes!

Sigh! I'm really not sure what's going to happend to Heroes next season. First, last week we get the news that Jeph Loeb and Jesse Alexander have been fired from the writing staff. Now we hear that the Heroes Game has been cancelled by Ubisoft and they've given the rights back to Universal. Of course this largely goes back to the abbreviated season due to the writers strike last season.

Further, the direction the show has taken this season has bordered on "jumping the shark". First, in my opinion, didn't Mohinder "cure" some of the characters last season? At least as far as he knew? So why does he need to do further research to "cure" Maya? Plus, Mohinder doesn't strike me as the type to inject himself with an untested formula like that.

One of the main issues fans have brought up in the past is the size of the cast. How did they address that this season? They added more characters and plotlines. With that they lost what was one of potentially the most interesting characters, Micah, in the process of eliminating the only plotline they cut.

Since Peter and Nathan's dad isn't dead, are we supposed to believe any character that has died is really dead? This eliminates the sense of worry we may have for any character. If someone dies, like Niki, guess what? She may be back. It's bad enough, you have four different characters that all have/had healing powers , now we have resurrection and/or faked death scenarios.

I do find it interesting how they killed the one self healer they did kill this season. Is Mr. Petrelli supposed to be a male version of Rogue? I've never believed a person with a healing/aging factor would die when they lost their powers due to rapid aging. It doesn't make sense. They should begin to age at a normal rate from that day forward. Of course, that is the only way you could kill one of these characters.

What's up with Angela? She was almost a good guy last season. Are we supposed to believe Sylar is just misunderstood?

What do I think they should have done? Maybe, just maybe, they should have picked up the third arc of the story as planned instead of changing the ending of the second arc. It would have put them closer to where they had originally planned for the fourth story, which is now the third part, Villains. But of course that's just my opinion.

Final thought, I hope Heroes is around for many more seasons, I'm just not sure it will.

Mighty Muggs

In addition to Zimm's post the other day, I want to throw in my 2 cents:

These are hit and miss with me. There are some I really like. Others, not so much.

The monster/creature ones are often the most interesting. My whole collection began with Chewbacca. He's cool looking. Then I got Han. Honestly, I don't really like his Mugg, but I had Chewie. Then Darth Vader. Darth Vader, Darth Maul, and Boba Fett are probably the coolest of all of the Star Wars Muggs. I've recently seen Asajj Ventress and she may rank up there.

Moving on to Marvel's Muggs, The Hulk and Iron Man have been my favorites. That Skrull Zimm showed me last week is pretty cool. I'd like to see the Thanos, but I don't think I want him. Galactus is cute, and that just ain't right. I also really, really like the Ghost Rider, which I have.

I think I'd rather have the Spidey and Friends line continue than to have these. But that's me. We'll see what Daredevil looks like

Next up, there is going to be a GI Joe line. Other than Snake Eyes, I'm not sure those characters will translate well. And even that doesn't really appeal to me.

So they're definitely a personal choice.

For the Couch - Not Necessarily the Kids

I currently am debating whether or not these are something that I should purchase; however, the one thing that I do know, is that these are not something I would share with my niece or nephew.

While the majority look like something that they could snuggle up with, the Venom is the stuff of nightmares. In fact, you don't need to have a nightmare to wake up to those teeth, eyes, and outstretched arms. Maybe kids are made of sterner stuff - maybe they did not think it through - or maybe they were not meant for kids but for my office couch.

Mighty Muggs Wave 3

Okay, because Robert loves these so much, I thought that I would post some pics of the upcoming Might Mugg November 2008 Wave 3 release.

Have to give some props to the Ghost Rider and Venom; however, Doctor Doom has always wanted to be the cute one.

I still haven't figured out if I do or don't like these.

Bowen Behind the Scenes

Bowen Designs provides its "sneak peak" into some of the statues that they are currently developing. It is a great place to prep yourself for what is coming up and justifiable reason for providing them with your email address.

Just to provide you with a sample - here is an upcoming Nova, which looks incredible, and I will be adding it to my collection. For other shots - look here.

Target Selling Charlie Brown Christmas Tree

Cool!

Target selling Charlie Brown Christmas Tree via Gear Diary.

That Just Ain't Right: Mighty Muggs: Punisher

That Just Ain't Right! I like the Mighty Muggs line from Hasbro. I actually have, from Star Wars, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, and Boba Fett, and from the Marvel Line, Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, and Ghost Rider.

But when they release a Toys R Us exclusive Punisher...that's just wrong. Much like Galactus, the Punisher just shouldn't be cute. Hasbro has also released two different Punisher's in their Marvel Super Hero Squad. Come on guys! That Just Ain't Right!

Hasbro, don't be surprised when Frank Castle comes knocking at your door.

Parker Coming to IDW

IDW Publishing released a press release back in July announcing that they would be publishing a series of comics by Darwyn Cooke based on the first four Parker novels written by Richard Stark.

Do you remember the movie Payback starring Mel Gibson? Even better the Director's Cut? How about Point Blank starring Lee Marvin? The character from those movies originated in a 1963 book titled The Hunter. He is Parker. He is not a good guy. He is a bad guy. A very bad guy.

Also good news, Scott Dunbier, late of Wildstorm Comics, is editor on the project. He was editor of many of the best projects to come from Wildstorm and is the mastermind behind the creation of the Absolute Edition hard covers from Wildstorm & DC. It looks like he's working his magic over at his new home, IDW.

Plus, it's by Darwyn Cook of JLA: New Frontier fame (available in two trades as Volume 1 and Volume 2). He was also responsible for the recent Spirit (Volume 1 and Volume 2) relaunch by DC.

So when it comes out, buy it.

Amazon.com Announces "Frustration Free Packaging" Initiative

We've all had that problem. You buy a toy and can't get it open to save your life. You eventually break out a box cutter, wire cutters, and the good scissors. All of that and you still just barely get it out of the package without destroying the toy.

Well, today, Amazon.com announced their "Frustration Free Packaging" Initiative. They are working with several manufacturers to begin using smaller, easier to open, recyclable packaging. Here is a list of the items already under this campaign. Let's see who else joins in on this movement.

One reason I keep several tools in the console in my truck is to open toys I buy my kids so they can play with them on the drive home. One of my favorite parts of getting a new GI Joe or Star Wars action figure was opening them up in the car and looking for the gun I dropped the whole way home. Of course, those were in the days before Florida required kids to wear seat belts and sit in child safety seats until they are old enough to drive.

In short, I think this is a good move. If it works out, there will be thousands jobless in China. How else can they get all of those twist ties on toys.

Heroes Writer Staff Shake Up

Jeph Loeb and Jesse Alexander have been let go from the hit show Heroes according to CBR. Click here for more details.

While I haven't enjoyed the current season very much, I'm not sure this was the right move to make. Part of the problem I've had with Heroes each season is, they almost try to start over each season. They always begin with everyone separated and they have to find one another again. You'd think they'd trade cell numbers or something. The cast has gotten too big, but there are ways of dealing with that too. Of course there have been enough comic book style deaths to not convince anyone that any character is really gone. I'm not enjoying the Sylar as a maybe good guy/maybe bad guy this season. There are too many time travelers / precogs. Too many people with the same powers. I'm not sure how I feel about the artificially created Heroes. Plus, didn't Suresh already create the cure that Maya wanted? Or did I miss something in Season 2?

I'm not Jeph Loeb's biggest fan, even though he is co-creator of one of my favorite graphic novels, I have enjoyed his TV work. He worked on what was probably the best season of Lost and done pretty well with Heroes, even with my complaints above.

I actually put most of the blame for the problems with the show on Tim Kring's shoulders. I think he doesn't know how to run a show like Heroes. Do you remember Misfits of Science from the 80s? That's where Tim Kring got his start as a TV writer. He's not a comic book guy at heart and I don't think he really gets this kind of show.

I hope Heroes is a better show for the change and wish Jeph and Jesse the best of luck. Of course we probably won't know until next season.

New from Warren Ellis' Bad Signal

IGNITION CITY is now being staged for release in the first half of 2009. Details to follow.

Don't know what Ignition City is? Click here and here.

For those who don't want to read it themselves or Warren Ellis' site is justifiably blocked at work or school, Ignition City is a cross between Deadwood and Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, and every other space hero. It's where the space heroes go to die/retire and miss the "good ole days".

Not getting Warren Ellis' Bad Signal? You should be. Click here.

If you were you'd know John Cassaday is hard at work on Planetary #27, which will hopefully be out early next year.

Update 8:36 pm: Zimm asks "So - what is about?"

My answer: I don't really know for sure yet. But I liked Deadwood and Planetary is one of my all time favorite comics. Seems like an idea that's worth trying for a few issues at least.

Update 11/3/2008 5:54 pm: Another post on WarrenEllis.com about Ignition City. It shows pictures some of the rayguns. The Bowman character referenced is a Flash Gordon analogue.

Consistently Reliable: Best Comics

As I continue my ever growing collection of statues and busts, I have found one website to be continually reliable in communications, service, and sheer enjoyment. I know that this sounds a bit cheesy, but you will have to put it into context, as my day job is helping companies develop their customer relationship management (CRM) programs.

During a number of CRM presentations, I refer to my collecting experiences as an anecdotal orientation on how and why customer relationships are so important. In many cases, it is a matter of preference and choice as to where you purchase products. Generally, the products are exactly the same, but the service and relationship are what helps you decide who and where you go - especially when it is a specific product (e.g. Comics and Collectibles).

So - it is your choice on where you spend your money and the type of service provided.

What drives me to come back to Best Comics & Collectibles International is the level of service and support that I have received over the years. While other sites have failed, forgotten, or even ignored requests and/or purchases, Tommy and his team have constantly been there. When I order from them, I don't have to worry about receiving the product; however, there are some sites that I would definitely recommend against.

Okay, sorry to ramble, but one last thing.

Now you know why I continually link to his website in various blogs, it is because I know (from experience) that Best Comics is one of the most reliable places to order statues, comics, and collectibles. When you spend your money (on such items), you should expect a certain level of service.

Also, if you don't recieve a weekly comic newletter, try theirs: Best Comics Newsletter

What the ..... ?

When we originally conceived this blog, I wanted to provide a critiques review of statues and busts being produced by the comic industry. However, as time went by, I realized that there were very few reviews of most of the products being produced, and in some cases, it took a great deal of effort to hunt or find all of the stuff available (see my previous post on "hoodies"); therefore, I wanted to post some items that we have stumbled upon which have made my head turn, my eyes squint (as I hope that it changes the appearance of what I am seeing), and one of us to comment, "What the...."

In order of no particular order, I give you the following:
  1. Batman: Cosbaby PVC Action Figure - which I rank as a "secret delight"
  2. Mighty Marvel Mugg Figures - no comment
  3. Operation Hulk - isn't he the last one that you should be operating on? Also, wouldn't his healing factor be an obstacle over actually being able to perform the operation?
Now hopefully, I will come to understand some of these items; however, as an ogoing feature, I will continue to post a monthly set of:

"What the ...... ?"

Please feel free to email me your recommendations. I am quite certain that we all have a few.
