Sideshow Collectibles: Wolverine

What?  Another statue?  Have I fallen back to my old habits of why I first started this blog?  No, no.  It's just another really cool Sideshow Collectible!Wolverine Legendary Scale Figure
Produced By Sideshow Collectibles
Artist The Sideshow Collectibles Design and Developoment Team
Dimensions 31"H X 33"W x 20"L
Type Legandary Scale
Edition Size Limited Edition
Ship Date January 2013
Estimated Price $1999.99
Zimm's Two Cent
If it weren't sheer beauty of this piece, the price of it would have kept me from mentioning anything about it.  Over 2.5 Feet tall, Sideshow did not pull their punches.
Points in Favor
  • Look at the details.  If you jump over to their gallery, you can see the scratch marks on the mask and sholder pads.
  • Paint job is beautiful.
  • Fabric costume is going to add some realism to the piece.
  • Love the gloves.
Points Against
  • Something about the face.  As hairy as Wolverine is, I think there should have been some scruff.
  • The price.
Recommendation.  Neutral.  If I could afford it, I would most definitely get it, but as I can't, I shan't.  In other words, if you can cut back on your other collectibles for a year, go for this one.

Sideshowtoy: Dark X-Men

This is a BEAUTIFUL piece! I haven't really been that inspired by any of the pieces lately, but this one grabbed me immediately. I had to tell you about it.

  • Kristafer Anka (Design)
  • Ariel Olivetti (Art Print)

Type Polystone Diorama
Edition Size: Limited Edition
Ship Date August 2012
Estimated Price $349.00
Zimm's two cents:
Wow! Simply, Wow! I think that you know where I am headed with this review, but I wanted to get the basics out of the way first.

Points in Favor
  • The faces are fantastic! Martin, I need to find more of your work.
  • Mireya, your painting is extrodinaire. Are you related to Randy?
  • Multiple (I repeat), MULTIPLE interchangable pieces. Yes, I got several with others, but these pieces really change it up. Go check out the gallery of pics!
  • Namor's look.
  • The base is outstanding!
  • I could keep going on and on about this one, but go check it out yourself!  Click on the gallery!
Points Against
Pricey for these day and times, but hey, I'm actually considering the payment plan for the first time.
Recommendation: Red Hot! Finally, a piece that is going to pull me all the way back into collecting and blogging.  Now, I just have to find room for it in my room.

Size 19"H x 19"W x 11"L
Type Statue

Zimm's Two Cents
Wow! I have a small Colossus, and I have been considering getting another one because of it. And this piece would be a "Wow."

Maybe I am coming off of a Silver Surfer high, but this piece is looking really cool.

Points in Favor
  • The coloring. I really like the coloring.
  • Great pose. Have to give them something there, as it is a little different from what I have seen.
  • Loving the costume. Not classic, but striking.
Points Against
  • Not quite that sure about the face. Seems off.
  • Size. Seriously, it would be another massive piece in my rather small office. However, I could really get into a couple more of these.

Recommendation: I am going with a "Buy." Sideshow is really kicking it up a notch. Silver Surfer, Spider-Man, Colossus, and Thanos.....to name a few.  Update:  I'm going to have to agree with Robert.  The face is horrible, as is the one on Nightcrawler.   Definitive Pass!

As a side note:  The pics from Comic-Con were spot on.  I wish they provided more of those types in the future.  Nice catch, Robert.

Robert's Two Cents
Very nice. I actually like that costume. I don't normally like that costume.
Update: I have seen a close up photo of the face on Statue Marvels and have to say I hate it.

Points in Favor
  • Nice paint job. It has that splotchy effect that I bitch about too much, but it's used to great effect here.
  • The metal textures are very nicely done even though it's not chrome.
  • The pose is OK. Again it's not classic, but it works.
Points Against
  • It's not the costume I'd prefer.
  • The face looks too scrunched up.

Recommendation: I'll give it a BUY. It's not a classic Colossus and definitely not my favorite costume. Also, as Zimm said, the face is a bit off. Still it's a very nice Colossus piece.

Update: I am going to change my review from BUY to Pass. The face is awful. This isn't Colossus. It's Robo Colossus. See this close up pic from Statue Marvels for more info: http://www.statuemarvels.com/f226/san-diego-comic-con-2010-gallery-9389-5.html#post252447

Sideshow: Silver Surfer Update

My Sideshow Collectibles Silver Surfer showed up at the door - the other day. (I got it as a Birthday gift from Jamie, who ordered it from my good friend Tommy at Best Comics.)

The phone pic (shown here) does not do this piece justice. The pictures at Sideshow do not do this piece justice. He is BEAUTIFUL. This piece is simply incredible. He is massive. (When I put in that he was 24", I didn't register the fact that he was that tall.) This Sideshow piece has me looking at other Sideshow Collectibles - which tend to run on the pricey side of collectibles.

Hmmmmm....should I change my existing orders with Tommy to other Sideshow Statues?

Anyway. Originally, I wasn't a 100% certain about this one (click here to find out more), but now that he is sitting in my office and I have taken a good look at him, this Silver Surfer is awesome! I have to change my recommendation. He's a Hot Buy!

Sadly, I know not who I will leave it to in my inheritance.

Robert: Yeah! I think it would look good in my house. I know I dissed it before, but I may need to print a retraction.

Sideshow Collectibles: Morgul Lord

I promised you more TLOTR, so here is another one. Well, I promised, and Bayard liked this one. At least, he said that he did.

This one has been out for a bit, but it is still worthy of a review.

Type Premium Format Figure
Size 29"H x 14"W x 17"L
Release 4th Quarter 2010
Price $289.99

Zimm's Two Cents
What is a "Premium Format Figure?" For almost $290, I think they should call it a statue. Definitely, a statue.

Points in Favor
  • Black cloak is actually material. Looks GOOD.
  • Paint job is incredible. Check out the dirty boots.
  • Again with detail. Take a close look at everything from the gauntlets, to the sword, and mace.
Points Against
  • Who is "Morgul Lord"? And what did he have to do with the endless walking of the trees? Seriously, those trees walked way to much.

Recommendation: For those TLOTR fans, this is a nice piece. Buy.

Bayard's Thoughts
All of the pieces in this series are evocative. They capture the world of the novels, as well as the character. I like the pose on this one; he is a predator, watching potential prey. If I could juggle the books to slip the $300 past the wife, he would be perched on the shelf, waiting for an opportunity or a Hobbit. BUY.

Robert's Two Cents
I agree that at that price point, it should definitely be a statue. Then again have you seen some of the Tonner Dolls?

Points in Favor
  • I agree with Zimm about the attention to little details. This is a well made piece.
  • He's very evil looking if a toy can be evil looking.
  • It's a great companion piece to the previously mentioned Gandalf.
Points Against
  • I know it's sacrilege, but I'm not a big LOTR fan. I love the Hobbit, but the sequel(s) never really did much for me. As a matter of fact I gave away two sets of the books before I could finish reading them. Plus where's Beorn?

Recommendation: I'm going to rate this purely for myself: Neutral. It's gorgeous, but it doesn't appeal to me.

Bayard's Response to Robert's Sacrilege
I agree--to an extent. I did enjoy LOTR (both the movies and novels). But it did not move me like The Hobbit.

I have a host of Tolkein's other works squirrled away around the house, waiting in the que to be read. None, though including LOTR, capture the gentle beauty and power of The Hobbit. If I could explain the difference, the reason The Hobbit lives and LOTR entertains, I would be a novelist.

(And just for the record--my attempts to get jiggy with the family funds have failed.)

Magneto - Legendary Scale Bust

But of course it's from Sideshow Collectibles. It is 'legendary'.

Size 13"H x 17"W x 7"D
Type Legendary Scale Bust
Release 4th Quarter 2010
Price $199.99

Zimm's Two Cents
Actually loving these pieces. If some of them were not so damn scary, I would have ordered them a while back. Okay, honestly. I couldn't afford them at the time.

Points in Favor
  • Beautiful colors. Vibrant, crisp, and spot on.
  • Loving the detail on the costume. If I remember correctly, his costume is composed of metal so that he always has a weapon on him.
  • Great detail.
Points Against
  • I wanted an angry face. While he looks to be using his powers, he has no expression whatsoever. Magneto is emotional.
  • What is it with Magneto and dimple chins. Robert probably knows what artist started all of that.
Recommendation: Neutral on this one. I like it, but there is something about the face that doesn't set right with me. I should spend some time hunting down Apocalypse.

Sideshow Collectibles: Tooned Up Spike

Or 'Ultimate' Spike.

But of course - it's part of Buffy. We have to talk about it.

Distributor Sideshow Collectibles
Manufactured By Electric Tiki
Size 10" H
Type Polystone Statue
Release 4th Quarter 2010
Price $129.99

Zimm's Two Cents
And here I thought that they were only doing a few in this series.

Points in Favor
  • It's part of a complete series.
  • Boots. Very cool boots. Wonder what the niece thinks of these. If she doesn't like them, then I can't show her my boots.
  • Smooth design.
  • Great colors. Black and red. LOL
Points Against
Recommendation: Buy. This entire series is worth collecting. Or am I giving it a 'buy' because it's Buffy. Probably.

Robert's Two Cents
Spike who? Buffy? He looks kinda like the guy who played Brainiac on Smallville or one of Captain Jack's former flames on Torchwood.

Points in Favor
  • Seriously though, it looks cool. I would consider it myself even though I was never a fan of Buffy.
  • This one looks more like the actual actor than any of the others even if it is a tooned up version.
  • The boots and the jacket are very cool. They take me back to the 90s when all of the cool characters had a trench coat and lots of buckles.
Points Against
  • I am not a Buffy fan. I just never got into it. I did buy the trades of the 8th series from Dark Horse, but I'm a huge Georges Jeanty fan.
Recommendation: Neutral. I like it but it's not my thing.

Once again - props to Sideshow.

Points in Favor
  • The base on this one. Wait - does it have a base?
  • The gargoyles that make up the base...or wall.
  • The colors are AWESOME.
  • Once again - Sideshow shows us why it is and always will be about the detail. The fingers. The wall. The back of the wall.
  • It fits awesome with some of the other Sideshow pieces. (see below)
Points Against
  • Can I afford it?
Recommendation
Hot Buy. Was there ever a doubt? I am not a Spider-Man nut, or I would get this one. Sadly, I have enough Spider-Man bust and statues for my collection. Or can you ever have enough of Spider-Man?

Sideshow Collectibles: Gandalf the Grey

I've been busy lately, and I haven't seen anything that has really knocked me off of my feet.

My bad. It has been out there.

I just haven't been looking. Take a gander at Gandalf! (I'm too funny.) (Robert: Not really, you're not)

Price $239.99

Zimm's Two Cents
Wow. Just....."wow".

Points in Favor
  • The detail alone is amazing.
  • Base ROCKS. (Yes, bad pun.)
  • The colors are perfect!
  • Have I mentioned the detail. Seriously. Look at the cane.
Points Against
  • It would not match my collection.
Recommendation: This is a Hot Buy. If I had enjoyed the series, I would have already ordered this one. This one......or the Morgul Lord.

The Morgul Lord's base doesn't rock though. Bwahahahahahaha (Robert: Make it stop!)

Robert's Two Cents
Very nice...but I don't think I love it.

Points in Favor
  • Great action pose.
  • It looks like the Gandalf from the cartoons, the films, and my imagination all rolled up into one.
  • Very nice sculpt and detailing.
Points Against
  • I'm not loving the face.
  • Like Zimm said, I'd have to completely redecorate.
  • I'd like to see more movement in the hair considering how much movement the rest of the statue conveys.
Recommendation: Neutral I'm a LOTR fan, but I don't think I need a Gandalf statue. On the other hand, it's well sculpted and looks very much like the grey one himself and if I were to want something like this, I'd like this one.

What the h.e.double toothpicks is this? TLOTR Plush Toys?

Funko exploded and created a series of "TLOTR" Plush Doll Characters. Who the fricken thought of this one?

Seriously. Seriously!?!

Gandalf, Frodo, Legalos, and an ORC!?! (The Orc is the cute one.)

This is why Baynard should review this stuff. He actually enjoyed TLOTR and the walking trees.

However, for $9.99 each, these may end up on Bayard's desk or under his tree for Christmas.

Bwahahahahahaha!

Oh my god!

OH MY GOD! This piece is AWESOME! I'm giving away my recommendation. Should I simply pass on points in favor and points against and simply skip to "HOT BUY!"

If you haven't started collecting, start here.
If you are collecting, collect this.
If you quit collecting, now is the time to return.

There is so much that I like about this piece, and yes, there are things that I don't like. Overall, it is awesome.

Points in Favor
  • Thanos & Mistress Death are two separate pieces. Too cool.
  • The base for Thanos rocks! Wasn't a big fan of the series, but this base rocks. Of all of Marvel's villains, I would have to put Thanos in the top 3....maybe 2.
  • The colors are great. Robert might say splotchy, but I love the shadows. It fits the characters.
  • Look at deaths cloak.......droooooool.
  • Detail, detail, and yes, more detail. Look at the close-ups of the base, Thanos, Mistress Death, the base, and then Thanos again.
Points Against
  • How am I going to afford this one? Hmmmmm, Robert and the kids don't need Christmas gifts this year.
Recommendation: Hot Buy! I do prefer Bowen's take on Death a little more, but she fits this diorama perfectly.

Note: You can skip any other reviews that may follow. Just skip over and check out the pics!

'The Duel of Light and Fire' - Gandalf vs. Balrog

Manufactured by: Sideshow Collectibles
Artists:
* Adrian Taboada
* Pablo Sapia
* Martin Orona
* Pablo Viggiano
* Tom Gilliland
* Anthony Mestas
* Darth Rimmer
* The Sideshow Collectibles Design and Development Team
Type: Polystone Statue
Size: 18"H x 14"W x 12"L
Price: $299.99

Zimm's Two Cents
I realize that I forgot a major point within the Trilogy. There were lots of trees. For some reason, Tolkein really likes the trees. The trees were so important that he allowed them to move from one plot point to another. He moved them from the (ever so exciting) forest to a (small, but supposedly important) battle. I didn't need any trees in the battle. I was already enjoying all of the death and mayhem.

Points in Favor
  • Great detail. I especially enjoy the wings.
  • Good colors. Balrog's mouth to Gandalf's robes.
  • Right size. If your going to do a diorama, then it needs to be sized appropriately to capture all of the details.
Points Against
  • Reviews point to the attachment point for Gandalf to the Balrog not being seamless.
  • Something isn't right about the translucent flames. They throw me off a bit.
Recommendation: Buy, or consider the faux-bronze piece. It has to be a decent piece, if they made a faux-bronze version of it.

Bayard's 25 cents
This is a great scene for a statue. It marks one of the deaths that Zimm mentions; Gandalf the Grey dies. And I think that is key to success of any portrayal of the battle. Gandalf teaches the fellowship how to die.

Points in Favor
  • The wings are wonderful. They are full of movement--past, present, and future.
  • The red of the mouth highlights.
  • The figures are intertwined; you have to find Gandalf. Perfect.
  • The statue is perched on the base; it looks as if it is unstable, falling.
Points Against
  • Something about Gandalf is not quite right. I would like a closer look. He almost looks wooden ( a problem in this series).
  • The Balrog's flaming whip seems cheap.
Recommendation
I am not sure, but it might have been more telling if Gandalf had looked to be getting the worse of the fight. Follow the advice of a collector (Zimm). Buy.

LOTR - Battle of the Last Alliance

Never really paid that much attention to the Lord of the Rings Statues and/or Busts; however, knowing Bayard, I think that I may start. In fact, if I were to be totally honest, I have found a few that I have considered giving as a gift, but I was never quite certain what the recipient would think of the statue.

With that said, I wanted to post an older piece. Not going to post a review of this one, but in the future, I figured that I will do my best to give an 'objective' opinion. Especially, since I never enjoyed the LOTR trilogy.

I know, I know. I get it. Short guy finds a ring. Trouble ensues. Everyone rallies to save the universe, but death (still) wins in the end.

Recommendation: Neutral. Until I really start doing my research, I can't tell you if this one is worthwhile or not.

Bayard's Penny's Worth
Points in Favor
The movement is graceful and unique; it captures the movement and chaos of battle (warriors tripping over the body of a fallen comrade).

Points Against
As I mentioned elsewhere, I am not wild about some details in Sauron's armour. Sauron seems stiff--a stiffness that is emphasized by his flowing cloak and the warriors.

Recommendation: Neutral
If I was going to spring for an LOTR, I would go with the Gandalf first. This battle scene does capture the death of LOTR, but it does not suggest Tolkein's notion of "unyielding will"--which contextualized death for the warriors of Middle Earth and Anglo-Saxon England.

And it can get creepier...

Although I would like to say that I saw this coming, I could not have foreseen this, this...atrocity.

Having seen the Frodo, Gandalf, and Legolas Wacky Wobblers, I suddenly empathize with Sauron's view of Middle Earth.
Someone, someplace, owes Tolkien an apology.
Recommendation
These things are poorly executed, crafted, and envisioned. For the sake of all that is decent, avoid them.
On the other hand--
The Gandalf Premium Format Figure is a different matter. Elegant, evocative, detailed (look at the frayed coat). Years ago in our D&D days, Zimm had a friend who would paint characters for us. They were fascinating; the guy's attention to detail made each piece unique. I still have them 20 odd years later. This statue looks as good. (The lcd light in the staff seems a bit cheesy.)

Distributed by: Sideshow
Size: 27.5" H
Release: Sept 2010
Price:
$260.99
Recommendation
It reminds me of the first time I read The Hobbit and watched Gandalf manage the trolls. Suddenly, I understand Robert's and Zimm's drive to collect. Buy.

What the.....Giant Guitar Mickey

I really didn't realize that this was a "GIANT" Guitar Mickey until I saw the sticker price, and then I looked at the size of it. OMG! $3499.99. Yes, I have been enjoying the Medicom Toy line of Disney characters, but I may have to win the lotto to get this one.

And then I would need a special room dedicated to stuff I don't mind being this big.....Oh, I forgot to tell you. He is 40" tall! Egads!

Still kindof cool though.

Sideshow Collectibles - Bullseye

I remember when Bullseye was first introduced, and from the very first story, I thought that he had all of the markings of a classic character. Like all characters, they have changed his personality from time to time, but overall - he remains a classic. He has all of the basics needed for a character to remember - costume, ability, and history. That's my way of saying that I like him as a villain.

  • As always with the Sideshow Statues, detail, detail, detail. Look at the throwing knives.
  • Coloring - Simple and on point.
  • Usually where they lose me is with the face - not here. Very Nice.
  • Great pose for the character.
Points Against
  • Only the base. Simple, but still on point.
Recommendation: I have to give this one the thumbs up on a Hot Buy. He will definitely look good staring down at you or any other statues that you might have.

I think the hand-tailored fabric offers something to this piece that a lot of other statues should seriously consider.

Points in Favor
  • The coat. Wire-hemmed so you can make it look the way you want to.
  • Paint Job is looking good.
  • Little bits of detail - like the glove - make this nice.
  • Two Heads - so that you can choose the one that you really like.
  • Premium Format has a cool charged card with it. May be Worth the extra $10.00
Points Against
  • The base. Not much there.
  • Faces throw me off a bit, but overall - they are pretty good.
Recommendation: This is a Hot Buy. Sideshow Collectibles tend to be lower in productions, and this is a cool piece. I think it would look pretty rockin' sitting on the shelf. I would splurge and go for the $284.99 Premium Version, if you can still get it.

I'm split on this piece. Part of me likes it and then part of me doesn't. I actually like the hands with the trailing power cosmic, but if you don't, they have alternative arms without power cosmic.

Points in Favor
  • 3 Heads and 2 Set of Arms means you can really make this your own piece.
  • Nice little features. The angle of the board. The form of his body.
  • He's mostly silver. I know that sounds weird, but sometimes people try to add in more then they should.
Points Against
  • I don't like 2 of the 3 Heads.
Recommendation: I am still split, but it looks to be a good BUY. If I hadn't seen the other two heads, there probably would have been no doubt in my mind.

Robert's Two Cents
Just a quick comment. It's a decent statue. The multiple heads & arms seem to make this one a good idea. However, There have been at least three other Silver Surfer statues in recent years, including at least one that basically did this same pose and did it much better and was about half the price.

I'd definitely rather have the recent Bowen Silver Surfer. Plus they offered a smaller scale one to go with the Galactus statue if you had bought it.

If you haven't picked one of the other Silver Surfer pieces up and you like this one definitely pick it up. It's a good piece. I'd probably be all over it if I hadn't seen the other pieces that have been made available in recent years. Neutral.

Additional note: You can still find the Bowen one on eBay for a little more than half the price of this one. The base isn't as nice, but the statue is its equal. Or you can get the Galactus scale one for less than $100.

Type Legendary Scale Bust
Size 18"H x 9"W x 8.5"D

Retail Cost $199.99 - Sold Out

Zimm's Two Cents
I don't provide a review of all of the statues and busts out there. In some cases, it is an artist rendition, and I would rather see the final product before I provide my two cents. (e.g. Bowen's recent release of Havok.)

In this case, the statue just does nothing for me. I'm not certain if it is the hair, the pose (shoulder lifted up), or the implants. But whatever it is, I opt to pass on writing up a review rather then provide a review.

Points in Favor
  • Colors. Clean and clear.
  • Sculpting - but all of these Legendary Scale Busts are good in the sculpting area.
Points Against
  • Hair. I just don't like it.
  • All Busts. I know that works for some guys, but I'm not certain that I want to take up shelf space for those.
Recommendation: You've probably already guessed, but Pass. But can I really say, "Pass"? Its a good piece, but it is just not for me. So maybe, just maybe, this should be a Neutral.

Your Thoughts?

Robert's Two Cents
I really, really like Spider-Woman and her costume. This bust doesn't really impress me.

Points in Favor
  • The face looks decent. Although the eyes are shaped wrong I think.
Points Against
  • I don't like the pose.
  • The breasts seem awkwardly positioned.
  • The hair. If you're going to have her hair going up behind her, you need to include all of her hair. Her hair is supposed to be incredibly long. Instead they hacked it to make it fit. I'd rather they let it hang and chop it where the bust ends.
  • The base is extremely bland.
Recommendation: Pass. I have always been a fan of the Jessica Drew Spider-Woman, but this bust leaves me feeling a little blah. With that said, I will qualify my review with the statement that I'm not following what Bendis is doing with the character, so this representation may be good for his and Alex Maleev's series.

Zimm's Two Cents
What a rockin piece of work this is! I have been admiring a number of Sideshow Collectibles Legendary Scale Busts for quite a while, and this is another one that jumps right out at me. I just wish I had the room for ALL of them.

Points in Favor
  • Simplicity! Sometimes, sticking to the basics makes it work, and this piece definitely does that for you.
  • Colors. Yes - it is just black and white, but they could have tried to do more, and why would you?
  • Sculpting. Like the colors - simple, but perfect.
Points Against
  • None.
Recommendation - Yet another Hot Buy! I love recommending good statues, when I find them, and every once in a while, I feel that I don't get to say it enough. Nice!

Robert's Two Cents
I like it, but I don't love it. The beauty of the black Spidey costume is partially in the chest emblem and without it, it's just a black mask.

Points in Favor
  • They did a good job with making the black mask look good.
Points Against
  • It lacks the personality I've expected from these over-sized busts from Sideshow.
  • The eyes should be bigger.
  • I need more of the chest logo if it's supposed to be the black Spider-Man costume.
  • The face lacks personality...wait, I said that already. Well, let me explain he looks like just another guy in a mask.
Recommendation - Neutral. It's nice it just doesn't wow me. The black Spider-Man costume is my favorite Spider-Man costume ever and that may play into my feelings.
