Ame-Comi - Series 2: Wonder Woman

Okay, I've been busy.  I guess we all have been a tad bit busy.  School starting and all.  I will try to make some of it up, but you know how it goes.

Distributor DC Direct
Sculptor Sam Greenwell
Size 5"h
Type PVC Mini Figure
Release April 2011
Price $49.99
Sale $39.99

Zimm's Two Cents
I bought my sister-in-law the Wonder Woman from the first series, and the piece was AWESOME..  (You have to say 'awesome' in an awesome way.)  Only hard part was trying to figure out how to put the sword on.

Points in Favor

  • Great addition to the series
  • Always great colors with Ame-Comi.  (Ame-Comi don't make me eat my words.)
  • Still has the great swordMini-Figures = Smaller but Affordable.
  • I think Sam Greenwell has done some great pieces.  I think there is some research required.
Points Against
  • In relation to other Ame-Comi pieces, this one doesn't have much wrong with it.
Recommendation:  Buy it - and put it next to your other Wonder Woman.

Ame-Comi: Jessi Quick as the Flash

Yet another one!

Distributor DC Direct
Sculptor Jack Matthews ... again
Size 9"H
Type PVC Statue
Release February 2011
Price $70.00

Zimm's Two Cents
I do enjoy this series. Ame-Comi does a good job on reinterpreting the characters.

Points in Favor
  • Great Colors - but that tends to be standard with Ame
  • I think my Niece would give up points for the boots, so I will for her.
  • The hair - lightening bolts.
  • I like the overall costume design.
Points Against
  • Is that a natural poise?
Recommendation: Buy - definitely, a good buy. Especially if you collect the series.

As a side note: John Matthews is doing a good great in this series.

Robert's Two Cents
I love this series, but I don't like this one.

Points in Favor
  • The shoes. They are great and perfect for SheFlash...I mean Jesse Quick.
Points Against
  • The face is off. Almost plastic looking. No pun intended.
  • Weird pose.
  • I don't like the costume. It's a basic Flash rip off, which Jesse Quick is not.
  • The costume is also generic off the shelf spandex, which Jesse Quick is not.
Recommendation: Pass - Just not feelin' it.

As a side note: John Matthews is doing a good great in this series.

Ame-comi - Duela Dent as the Joker

Sigh.

I am SO sorry. My current project hasn't really allowed or provided me with the opportunity to sit down and enjoy doing what I love to do. (e.g. Geek out and write.)

Though Bayard might debate the point on whether my scribbles actually equated to writing - which is why I never share any of my short stories with him.

Talk about a critic.

Oh, sorry. I forgot why we are here.

Ame-Comi Joker!!!!! Wahoo.

Distributor DC Direct
Sculpted by Jonathan Matthews
Size 9.25"H
Type PVC Statue
Release February 2011
Price $70.00

Zimm's Two Cents
DC already nailed this one: "Steam & Sass." "...futuristic Victorian vixen attire."

I would say, "Ame-Comi, Steampunk, Joker - Oh MY!"

Points in Favor
  • Steampunk style
  • Great - INCREDIBLE Colors
  • Lots of detail. Serioiusly - look at the costume.
  • Steampunk Goggles - I want a pair, and I plan on finding a pair at DragonCon.
Points Against
  • PG-13 Costume
Recommendation
Must Have! Definitive HOT BUY!

The only thing that will top this piece is that if someone actually wears it at DragonCon.

Hint, hint to whoever may be listening. Hello, DragonCon!!!!!!

Robert's Two Cents
Two words: Awe Some! This is sweet. It's the right balance of naughty and nice.

Points in Favor
  • I could totally see someone wearing this costume to a con.
  • They've nailed the spirit of the Joker while not making it the Joker in drag.
  • I'm with Zimm. I love the goggles.
Points Against
  • OK, I don't love the shoes. Still they are reflective of the Steampunkish style of the whole piece.
  • $70 is getting a bit pricy.
Recommendation
Hot Buy! I may have to end my spending freeze to get this one.

AME-COMI: Artemis

Yet another one! Keep them coming, Ame-Comi.

Distributed by DC Direct
Sculpted By Jack Mathews
Size 9.5"h
Type PVC Figurine
Release Nov. 2010
Price $60.00

Zimm's Two Cents
She looks really familiar. In fact, if I squint a bit, I think that she reminds me of the Ame-Comi Wonder Woman.

Points in Favor
  • As always, the colors.
Points Against
  • I feel like this is Wonder Woman repainted, renamed.....rebranded.
  • Isn't there only one 'magic lasso'?
Recommendation: Get the original - find the Wonder Woman. If you don't have it, have fun getting the sword to fit into her hand. Beautiful, but I will Pass.

Robert is the one that is really collecting these. I wonder what he thinks.

Robert's Two Cents
Zimm, she's the fill in Wonder Woman from the mid 90s, who herself was based on a character who was introduced years ago as the previous bearer of the title before Diana. Mike Deodata Jr. was the artist on the book at the time.

Points in Favor
  • I liked the Artemis storyline.
  • The color choices are dead on. She wore a non Wonder Woman costume and these colors match the costume she was wearing in her own series.
  • The head sculpt and the sandles are actually probably more appropriate for Artemis than Diana.
  • I almost think they had intended the original to be Artemis.
Points Against
  • It is a repaint of the existing Wonder Woman. I would have preferred that she at least get her own sculpt.
  • They should have given Diana an axe and Artemis the sword. Also Artemis should have a bow and arrows. Artemis is an archer.
Recommendation: I'd also get the original. However, if you were a huge fan of Artemis, this is the more appropriate one to get. I'm calling it Neutral, unless you're an Artemis fan.

Sculptor Sam Greenwell
Type PVC Statue
Size 9.75"H
Release October 2010
Price $60.00

Zimm's Two Cents

I don't have that much to say about this one.

Points in Favor

  • Great Colors.
  • Unique take on the character.
  • Niece would probably like the boots.

Points Against

  • Costume Makes me think of Witchblade character.
  • A little adult for the line of characters.

Recommendation: Still like the series, but this one is a Pass for me.

Ame-Comi Heroine: Jade

While these have been both hits and misses, you have to always enjoy seeing their newest releases.

Manufacturer DC Direct
Sculptor Sam Greenwell
Type PVC Statue
Size 9.75"H
Release October 2010
Price $60.00

Zimm's Two Cents
More then anything, I think this one truly catches the essence of a teenager. Green Powered MP3 Player - Too Cool!

Points In Favor
  • Colors. The different colors of green, the sharp blacks, and the hint of red in her mouth.
  • The headphones. I had to provide the shot that showed how cool they really are.
  • the detail in the Costume. Did you notice the lanterns throughout.
  • Little details in the costume. Look at the creases in the fabric.
Points Against
  • I guess the shoes. I was hoping for something a little bit more.
Recommendation: Going to give this one a Hot Buy, as it is far too fun for the average buy.

Ame-Comi Heroine: SuperGirl (v.2)

Produced By DC Direct
Designed By Jonathan Matthews
Sculpted By Jonathan Matthews
Size 8.75"H
Type PVC Statue
Release July 2010
Retail Price $60

Zimm's Two Cents
I was a huge fan of the first Supergirl; however, this one leaves a tad bit to be desired. Overall, it is pretty good, but there are a few things that stand out.

Points in Favor
  • The mirror is a nice touch.
  • She looks more like a cheerleader then a hustler - which tends to be an ongoing them with Ame-Comi. This statue seems to have more of a 'cartoon' simplistic style to it. Look at the face and legs.
  • I like the corset style costume. Great colors, Kryptonian symbols, and great cape.
  • Colors really pop.
Points Against
  • The face seems a tad bit flat.
  • The hand poses are not natural. Both the one holding the mirror and the one on her hip appear to be out of place.
  • The boots may be lacking - I will follow-up with the niece.
Recommendation: Pass. This one is nice, but not perfect. If you collect ALL of them, sure. If you only collect a few, there are others to grab before it.

Robert's Two Cents
I too am a huge fan of the original Supergirl. This one sucks.

Points in Favor
  • Nothing in my book.
Points Against
  • The mirror seems like a stupid accessory for her to have.
  • The costume is lame. It's a bit too Buffy the movie for my tastes.
  • The hair and face are way off.
Recommendation:Pass . I did think of one positive, the costume and hair are slightly reminiscent of Supergirl's first appearance.

Robert Updated to add: I'll also give Zimm that the Kryptonian symbols are cool. It reflects further my whole point of it "reflecting" the original appearance of Supergirl. Still think the mirror thing is lame.

Ame-Comi Heroine: Steel

Ame-Comi. Ame-Comi! AME-COMI!!!!! WAHOOOOOO!

Produced By DC Direct
Designed By Dustin Nguyen
Sculpted By Jonathan Matthews
Size 8.25"H
Type PVC Statue
Release July 2010
Retail Price $60

Zimm's Two Cents
While I haven't enjoyed all of the releases, I have enjoyed the series. I have enjoyed the different takes on the DC Universe characters, and this is one of them. I am always excited to see a new piece from them.

Points in Favor
  • Steampunk Goggles! Wahoo. I got to combine Steampunk with a Statue Review.
  • Colors - Simple, but Striking. From the Blue, to the red and yellow and the white of the metal contrasting to her skin tone. NICE.
  • The little pieces of detail. Gloves, eye/lip liners, differences in the boots.
  • The take on the character. I like this Ame-Comi version of Steel.
  • The pose. Some statues just do not seem natural, this one does.
Points Against
  • The base is always the same - so while it is nothing fancy, they are consistent.
  • PVC Statue. I haven't really bought into the "PVC" style of statues yet.
Recommendation: Buy. If you have been collecting this series, this will be an excellent addition to the series.

Robert's Two Cents
This is one of the better one's so far. It reminds me a lot of the period of time where John Henry Irons' niece was Steel.

Points in Favor
  • Reminds me a lot of a character I enjoyed a lot.
  • The accessories. I love her goggles and the hammer.
  • Also the design is by Dustin Nguyen. I love most of his designs.
Points Against
  • She really should have more armor on.
Recommendation: Buy. This is one I'll probably get. I like most of these so far. There have been a few misses, but this isn't one of them.

I wonder if they'll reference Titans: Stone Paper Scissors when they get around to more of the Titans characters.

Ame-Comi Heroine: Wonder Girl

Ame-Comi provides us with another DC Heroine; and I imagine that there are more to come. Let's just hope that they are considering adding a few more Heroes to the series.

Produced By DC Direct
Designed By Sanford Green
Sculpted By Jonathan Matthews
Type PVC Statue
Size 8.25" H
Ship April 2010
Price $60.00

Zimm's Two Cents
What the frack were they thinking? I mean...come on!

Points in Favor
  • It's another Ame-Comi piece for the collection. (That's all I got on this one.)
Points Against
  • She looks like a stripper! I realize that some heroines where small outfits, but they don't look like stripper outfits.
  • Her pose reminds me of an old Sears' catalog - entirely unnatural.
  • What is with the facial expression? Once again, we are back to the stripper or is she a 'woman-of-the-evening'?
  • This statue looks more like a Barbie Doll toll then a PVC collectible.
Recommendation: Pass. If you do want to get it (which I would never understand), wait for clearance.

Robert's Two Cents
Umm...underage stripper? Really?

Points in Favor
  • The overall look has the proper colors and the required elements to be Wonder Girl are there, but....
Points Against
  • I agree with Zimm. Not only does she look like a stripper, she looks like an underage stripper. Cassie's supposed to be about 16.
  • Maybe if they hadn't put the chaps on her and done something different with the bottoms and changed her pose, I might feel differently.
  • They even made the lasso inappropriate.
Recommendation: Pass. I might be biased. I have a daughter and am personally protesting the TV shows with little girls in beauty pageants. I think this costume and pose is completely inappropriate. Ame Comi Fail!

Ame-Comi: Wonder Woman v2

Ame-Comi released two more figures in their ongoing PVC Figures.

Produced By DC Direct
Designed By Dustin Nguyen
Sculpted By Jack Mathews
Type PVC statue
Size 8.75"H
Ship April 2010
Price $60.00

Zimm's Two Cent's
What happened? I was enjoying the majority of this series, and then this one showed up. This one may be a personal preference, but very little about it screams Wonder Woman.

Points in Favor
  • The axe looks good. Truthfully, I prefer the sword, but the axe is a great change.
  • Great colors - but Ame-Comi tends to be consistent in this area. Who knew that Wonder Woman spent so much time on her toenails.
  • As you have a choice of the hair being up or down, the down one reminds me of Linda Carter.
Points Against
  • The gorgon head is lacking. From the face, to the snakes, to the blood.
  • Not a big fan of the Princess Leia based costume. I'm probably an exception here, as Star War fans everywhere should love this. Lynda Carter in a Princess Leia outfit, but I don't see this as something that she would have worn into battle against a gorgon.
  • Very little of the "Ame-Comi" feel that the other pieces have. Especially in the eyes.
Recommendation: Pass. Unless you love Wonder Woman and Princess Leia and have always wanted them combined, this one is not as enticing as Ame-Comi's first Wonder Woman.

Robert's Two Cent's
This one is a bit of a contradiction for me. I will say I much prefer the original Wonder Woman Ame Comi over this one, but I really do like this one. The devil's in the details.

Points in Favor
  • It's based on a design by Dustin Nguyen. He's a phenomenal artist and this piece screams with his touch.
  • The design of the logo on the chest piece is really cool. I also like the embellishments on her bracelets. Both are very nice touches.
  • I think I prefer the hair up version for some reason.
  • This is one of those pieces where I'd really like to hear her story. She looks a bit Asian to me but she's holding the Medusa/gorgon head. Is there a dichotomy or were the features of her face made Asian because this is supposed to be the mangaized DC characters? I really would like to hear more.
Points Against
  • If I stare at it too long, I may turn to stone.
  • I don't love the costume. However, like I said above I do like all of the little embellishments.
  • I don't like the one boot thing she has going one. We haven't asked yet, but I don't think Zimm's niece is going to like the shoes.
  • The axe is cool. I'd prefer a sword, but I get that they didn't want to do that again.
  • Shouldn't she have a mirrored shield too?
Recommendation: Qualified Buy. If I didn't already have the first Wonder Woman, I'd be all over this one. The first one is a better piece on many levels. This is cool and has a lot of personality and Dustin Nguyen is one of the best comic book artists on the planet. The original screams Wonder Woman more. This one could be any mythology based heroine.

Ame-Comi Flashbacks

In light of this apparently being Ame-Comi week here at Comics and Geeks, I thought I'd look back at some of the other Ame-Comi PVCs available currently that we've either reviewed already or at least hightlighted.

Batgirl v2:

Originally, I'd given this piece a Pass. In light of the new Batman offering, I'd say I'm going to upgrade this one to a Buy. It's a terrifically moody piece that would probably make a better companion piece to the Ame-Comi Batman than the Ame-Comi Robin will. I still think it looks like Batman sewed her legs together for being a naughty girl, but the overall attitude of the piece really matches the spirit of the Batman.

I'm upgrading to a Buy!

Black Canary:
I still hate this one. I'm also sticking to my comment about her looking Yu Gi Oh. But the biggest sin of this piece is the missing fishnet stockings. Much like Zatanna, I think the fishnets are essential to any Black Canary piece and while Zatanna can get away with conventional thigh high stockings Black Canary cannot. Give me fishnets or don't give me Black Canary.

Pass!

Huntress:

I love the Huntress. This one's a Hot Buy! This is pretty close to the original design, but still takes the necessary liberties to make it an Anime version of the character. There's just enough of a nod to the Pre Crisis Huntress being the daughter of Batman and Catwoman, but just enough of the current version to stay true to the character.

Hot Buy!

Ame-Comi Hero Series: Batman

Now the Heros of the DC Universe are turning Ami-Comi! And it started with BATMAN!!!! How cool is that.

Produced By DC Direct
Sculpted By Jonathan Matthews
Dimensions 8.75"
Type Vinyl Statue
Edition Size Limited Edition
Ship Date February 2010
Estimated Price $59.99

Zimm's Two Cents
As Robin was yesterday, Batman is today. And how cool is he!
Points in Favor
  • The colors, as always, are bright and vibrant.
  • Portrayed as a true "nightmarish" creature of the night.
  • Great details to the gloves, belt, and (of course) the boots.
  • Nice counter piece to the Ame-Comi Robin piece coming out at the same time.
  • Maintained the seriousness of the face, while still creating the variation.
Points Against
  • The bases on these are a little 'flat'. (Other than that, not much).
Recommendation: Hot Buy. This has to go with the Robin!

Robert's Two Cents
Again, I'm enjoying the Ame-Comi pieces. Like Zimm says the bases are bland. I believe this is intentional in the case of this series. They're keeping the focus on the piece instead of the "background". Some pieces scream for a really nice detailed base (Maestro?), but others, don't (Black Canary).
Points in Favor
  • I believe this is the first male Ame-Comi piece.
  • They managed to keep the dark brooding side of Batman and yet they managed to make him appear youthful. They did a good job.
  • Very dark and intimidating.
  • Might have to buy this one.
  • Still need to pickup the Huntress.
Points Against
  • Not so much a point against as a comment. Haven't we all had enough alternate reality versions of Batman? Also don't we all have enough Batman statues, figures, or whatever collectible?
  • The other side of what I just said is, I respect that DC waited this long before releasing Batman, even if they have already done two Batgirls and two Catwomans.
Recommendation: Hot Buy. This If you buy this one you need the Robin from yesterday's post. I wonder what Zimm's niece will say about Batman's shoes.

Ame-Comi Heroine Series: Robin

Another few from Ami-Comi! This series keeps getting better and better.

Produced By DC Direct
Designed By Elsevilla
Sculpted By Jonathan Matthews
Dimensions 7.5"
Type Vinyl Statue
Edition Size Limited Edition
Ship Date February 2010
Estimated Price $59.99

Zimm's Two Cents
I really like this series. You have to accept the idea that they are Ame-Comi characters and different.
Points in Favor
  • Bright strong colors. From the yellow cap, to the red hair, to the green pole.
  • The details in the gloves, belt, and bat-garter.
  • The character looks like a little girl - which is what a female version of Robin should look like.
  • Good Price point.
Points Against
  • Not quite certain about the collectibility of this series, but if you are collecting the series - what an awesome addition.
Recommendation: Hot Buy. When you see the Ame-Comi Batman that goes with this one, you will definitely understand how the two go together.

Robert's Two Cents
I've been collecting these as I find ones I like for a while now. It actually started with Power Girl, who isn't a character I'm a huge fan of, but her Ame-Comi piece was awesome. Since then, I've gotten the original Batgirl, Wonder Woman, and the Donna T
Points in Favor
  • Price is good. They're approaching pricy, but not too bad yet. You can still find them in the $40s.
  • The production values on these are terrific. I wasn't into the PVC anime statues until I acquired my first piece in this collection.
Points Against
  • Not really Robin or the essence of Robin.
  • For a female Robin I've always pictured Carrie from The Dark Knight Returns or someone resembling Jubilee from the X-Men.
  • I guess it's more reminiscent of a young Dick Grayson Robin, who, let's face it hasn't been Robin the whole time I've been seriously collecting comics.
Recommendation: Buy.

Ame-Comi's Catwoman V.2

Ame-Comi's next release for April 2009 is their second version (or what the are calling V.2) of Catwoman.

Produced By: DC Direct
Designed By: Paitoon Ratan
Dimensions: 9"
Type: Vinyl Statue
Edition Size: Limited Edition
Ship Date: April 2009
Estimated Price: $59.99

Zimm's Two Cent
I can't really say that there is much that I like about this statue.

Points in favor:
  • Paint and colors harken back to a more classic purple/green coloring of catwoman.
Points against:
  • I don't think that I like the boots, as they do not really look like they leave enough room for the toys.
  • She looks less like a DC character and more like a scifi character from some Flash Gordan series.
  • I am not a big fan of the tail or the ears.
Recommendation: Pass, and I will probably be on one of the few that says to pass on this one.

Robert's Two Cent
I really like this one. A large part of what I like about her is that she is a tribute to the Catwoman of my youth. This reminds me of the Catwoman in the old Batman cartoons (the ones with Bat-Mite) and Super Friends. It also reminds me (in an homage way) of the Alan Davis drawing of Catwoman from DC's Who's Who.

Points in favor:
  • More like the classic Catwoman I grew up with as a kid (Pre Jim Balent, whose Catwoman I enjoyed).
  • Sexy, but not in a sleazy way.
  • I like the tail and the ears. The antenna is an interesting touch.
  • The cape is Catwoman appropriate, while looking a bit like a nod to the classic Robin costume.
Points against:
  • The boots are horrible, but I do like the way the claws work on this one.
  • Probably a little too sci fi. But sci fi fits with the spirit of the Ame Comi line. It is the mangaized version of the DC Characters.
Recommendation:Buy. It's a reimagining to the classic Catwoman while updating her look to fit in with the rest of the Ame Comi line. I definitely like this one better than the first Ame Comi Catwoman.

Ame-Comi: Batgirl V.2

While Sideshow has some others that I want to talk about, I stumbled upon some new Ame-Comi Statues. I am really enjoying this series. I'm not collecting any, as the ones that I have bought I have given as gifts, but I do enjoy their spin on the characters.

Produced By: DC Direct
Designed By: Paitoon Ratan
Dimensions: 9"
Type: PVC Statue
Edition Size: Limited Edition
Ship Date: April 2009
Estimated Price: $59.99

Zimm's Two Cents
You have to take into account, this is an Ame-Comi interpretation of the characters.

Points In Favor:
  • I like the more "goth" take on the modern day Batgirl.
  • The batarangs and the bats are what first caught my eye, and then it was ...
  • The cape, while wrapped around her feet would make her fall, to me it was still a relatively nice touche.
Points Against
  • Not certain how big of a fan I am of the Vinyl Statues.
  • My niece would want to see the shoes.
  • Not quite certain that she should have so much yellow.
Recommendation: Neutral for me, but a Buy, if you are collecting the series.

Robert's Two Cents

Points In Favor:
  • The batarangs, bats, and cape are all excellent details.
Points Against
  • The stitching on the inside of her thighs with her skin showing makes her look like she was naughty and Batman had her legs sewed together to punisher.
  • Except for the color scheme she looks more like Scarecrowgirl than Batgirl.
  • The PVC statues prices have gone up enough to make me seriously question which of these I pick up.
Recommendation: Pass. I like the Ame Comi series and even own a few (Power Girl, Wonder Woman, the first Batgirl, and Troia), but this one doesn't do it for me as a collectible. I'd rather see you spend your money on the new Catwoman that's coming out.

Ame-Comi: Huntress PVC Figure

Reviewing a release that Robert mentioned a few blogs back, I thought that I would at least give the statue a quick review and rating. This is another in the Ame-Comi series - the Huntress, and I must admit that I keep coming back to her, as she would make a great gift for my niece.

Manufacturer: Ame-Comi
Designed by: Udon Studios
Dimensions: 9" tall
Edition Size: Limited Unknown
Release Date: July 22, 2009
Retail Price: $55.00, with a Sale Price around $44.00 here

Points in Favor:
  • Great Anime representation of Huntress
  • Attention to detail from the crossbow holsters, to the cape, to what look to be claws.

Points Against - while there really do not appear to be any. The only issue that my niece pointed out (which may be do to the picture) is that it is hard to tell where the boots end.

Personal Choice: HOT BUY

Ame-Comi Wonder Woman (& Others)

Manufacturer: Ame-Comi
Product Type: Vinyl Statue
Designed by: Udon Studios
Dimensions: 9" tall
Edition Size: TBD
Release Date:
Retail Price: $59.99
Grab it For: $29.99

Background to why I picked the Ame-Comi series:
I did not notice this series until my niece went into great detail about the Anime style, faces, eyes, hair, and so forth - and yes, I have been addicted to Anime series. Anyway - as I am an avid collector, I wanted to get something that bridged the gap between the two of us. When I originally saw the pictures and statues, I liked them but was uncertain.

Now, after having seen three of them and passing them on to my niece, I must admit that I like the series. The casting, colors, and "anime" version make for some really awesome characters. I was lucky enough to grab her Supergirl and Cheetah, while I gave her mom Wonder Woman.

For this review, I am talking about all of the statues in general; however, one of my favorites in this collection is the Wonder Woman statue.

Points in Favor
  • Great collection for the younger geeks, female geeks, and/or anime geeks.
  • Great designs and colors.
  • They have some great shoes. (Okay - this last point came from my niece. When I showed her the series of statues, she included the shoes in determining if she liked the outfits or not. Go figure on this point.)
  • Wizard Universe is having some great sales on a number of these.
Points Against
  • Some of the outfits have a little to be desired in the way of maintaining the character they represent.
  • Also - again - not all of the shoes are that great.
  • Figuring out how to get Wonder Woman's sword in her hand or Supergirl hooked to base without driving self crazy.

Personal Choice: Some are on CLEARANCE, so why not grab a few.
