Green Lantern Animated Series - Statues

Following up with a previous post, I thought I would give you a glimpse of the statues coming out of the Green Lantern: Animated Series.   Now that I am enjoying the series, I'm actually considering adding a couple of these to my collection.  (Still not a fan of the Hal Jordan statue.  Though, I will give it a second look after this post.)

Each statue is running around $125, which is not that bad for a statue, and they are using different sculptors for various pieces.  Take a look at Atrocitus and Saint Walker.  Before the series, I had seen the Atrocitus statue and had considered putting in an order.  Now that I know there will be an ENTIRE collection of these characters, you just never know.  Definitely some "Hot Buys".

What I'm Watching Now: Green Lantern Animated Series

When I first saw the promo for this series, I really didn't think anything of it; however, after a few episodes, I set the recorder.  In fact, I am recording Young Justice again.

Take a look:

Now I have to reconsider the statues.

Blackest Night: Larfleeze the Orange Lantern

This one has already been released, but after seeing it, I definitely wanted to talk about it for a second.  Part of the Heroes of the DC Universe: Blackest Night series.
Produced By DC Direct
Artist Ivan Reis
Sulptor Jean St. Jean
Dimensions 5.75"h x 3.5"w x 3.5"d
Type Mini-Bust
Edition Size Limited Edition
Ship Date Already has.
Estimated Price $69.99  (You can find it for sale if you look around.)

Zimm's Two CentsI was really hoping for the best on this entire series, but after really looking at the Hal Jordan and Sinestro, I kindof gave up hope.  I realized that I would not be lining several shelves with a collection of interglactic ring barriers.

Lucky for me, Larfleeze carries the whole lantern with him instead of a ring.

Points in Favor
  • Great colors.  The orange looks to be the perfect shine.  It contrasts nicely with the white, black and Larfleeze's skin tone.
  • Great piece of sculting.  I actually like this rendition of Larfleeze.
  • He's holding the Lantern like he means it!
  • Always thought the base for this series was a good idea.
Points Against
  • Is anyone really going to know who the hell Larfleeze is when they are glancing over your collection?
Recommendation.  Buy.  Even though I am not going to buy the entire series, this one is a statue that I would definitely put in a visitor viewable spot

Silver Green Lantern Ring

Just found this on SuperHeroStuff.com.

It's a silver Green Lantern Ring (affiliate link).

This is a pretty cool item for the stocking of that Green Lantern fan in your family. Personally I've wanted a Green Lantern ring for years.

SuperHeroStuff.com has a 12% off deal running on Green Lantern merchandise through tomorrow, if you follow them on Twitter or their Facebook page you can find the code. The other cool option is they have a $5 off discount code if you follow them on Facebook. That would almost cover the basic USPS shipping cost.

Blackest Night: Black Hand

2nd bust in a mini-bust series based upon the Blackest Night series.

Distributor DC Direct
Designer Ivan Reis
Sculptor Jean St. Jean
Size 5.5"H
Type Bust
Release February 2011
Price $70.00

Zimm's Two Cents
I really enjoyed the Blackest Night series, and surprisingly enough, I am enjoying the Green Lantern character - something that I never did as a kid.

Points in Favor: Still enjoying the base.

Points Against
  • All of the 'sketch' lines in the face, skull, and arms bother me.
  • Colors aren't as vibrant as I would want. Black can still be vibrant.
  • Never liked the whole "Bruce Wayne" skull thing. (Why green horns anyway?)
Recommendation: Passing on this one. Originally, I thought about getting the entire series; however, this piece really doesn't cut it for me. I am second guessing myself on that idea.

Blackest Night Bust: Green Lantern Hal Jordan

Sitting on a plane with a 2 hour and 55 minute delay is a wonderful way to end 3 weeks of chaos, exhaustion, and

So, I apologize. I apologize for the delay. I apologize for the lack of communicating. I apologize for not taking better care of myself.

But did you see this!!!!!! My opinion on this series may be biased, as I truly enjoyed this series, yet I never liked Green Lantern before this. I guess that should speak volumes.

Distributor DC Direct
Artist Ivan Reis
Sculptor Jean St. Jean
Type Porcelain Bust
Size 6.25"H
Release January 2011
Price $70.00

Zimm's Two Cents
I've been waiting for a Green Lantern statue / bust, and whether you realize it or not, I have given some of the previous statues the benefit of doubt - as I really, really want a Green Lantern statue and/or bust. With that said, this may be the one. I could really get into collecting the entire line of busts from this series.....except maybe Rage.

And Love.............not sure about avarice. Hmmmmmm. Guess I will take them as they come.

Points in Favor
  • Incredible colors.
  • The little pieces of detail. The different lantern symbols, the creases on his costume.
  • It's Hal Jordan. (Yes, I know. I am not a lantern-junkie, but I do love the classics.....or at least this classic. Not the Flash classic. Sorry about the sidebar there.)
  • His lantern symbol is 3-D.
  • There are going to be 12 busts released throughout 2011. What a collection! What a way to release them. Bowen take notes!
Points Against
  • DC is still having some trouble with the paint around the hair and face.
Recommendation: Buy...BUY! BUY!!!!! Not necessarily certain if this is a Hot Buy, but if you are listening Tommy, this is a BUY!

Note: Tommy is my dealer. You can find him at Best Comics.

Note to Robert and Baynard: I'm stuck on a plane and did this to pass time. Ignore all typos and any issues that you might have with my grammar.

What the.....White Ring ..... LED Lights???

I avoided buying the last set, yet I was lucky enough to pick Black Ring up at the Houston ComicCon. (Forget who snatched that one away? Hmmmmm???) But does someone really want to invest in the new set? With a white ring? With LED lights that have a special key to change the battery.

Recommendation: Pass. I can spend $60 elsewhere or Neverwhere. Also, from the picture, the lights look white instead of their intended colors.

Release Date: July 2010

Blackest Night Conclusion

Sorry about the delay in my posts. Traveling and starting a new project can really take a toll on a person.

First off - this is not a spoiler or a review of the final Blackest Night books. This is a simple observation of why I have enjoyed the series for so long.

For those following the series over the last few years, I picked up this series with the start of the Sinestro Wars. I understood the concept.

The Sinestro Corp Wars were not going to be about Yellow vs Green Lantern, or Sinestro revenge against the Guardians. No, this war was over something simple. Sinestro's hatred of Hal Jordan. Hal replaced Sinestro's friend, and then Sinestro took Hal took on the task of training Hal to be a Green Lantern.

As we all know, that turned into an incredible disaster. Sinestro gets thrown out of the Green Lantern Corps, and Hal is a hero.

But the wars grew into even more, as the Blackest Night dawned. (How did you like that one?)

Anyhoo-ha (and to finally get to my point), the Blackest Night is a story about the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Hal and Sinestro are forced to work together, while still despising each other. Two "friends" constantly competing to outdo the other. Hal can never be better then Sinestro, while Sinestro could never do anything good.

While some have enjoyed the intergalactic war, I have enjoyed these two characters. I guess that's why I still have trouble picking up Green Lantern Corps, and while I have enjoyed Blackest Night, I am uncertain about Brightest Day.

Sculptor Sam Greenwell
Type PVC Statue
Size 9.75"H

Zimm's Two Cents

I don't have that much to say about this one.

Points in Favor

  • Great Colors.
  • Unique take on the character.
  • Niece would probably like the boots.

Points Against

  • Costume Makes me think of Witchblade character.
  • A little adult for the line of characters.

Recommendation: Still like the series, but this one is a Pass for me.

Ame-Comi Heroine: Jade

While these have been both hits and misses, you have to always enjoy seeing their newest releases.

Manufacturer DC Direct
Sculptor Sam Greenwell
Type PVC Statue
Size 9.75"H
Release October 2010
Price $60.00

Zimm's Two Cents
More then anything, I think this one truly catches the essence of a teenager. Green Powered MP3 Player - Too Cool!

Points In Favor
  • Colors. The different colors of green, the sharp blacks, and the hint of red in her mouth.
  • The headphones. I had to provide the shot that showed how cool they really are.
  • the detail in the Costume. Did you notice the lanterns throughout.
  • Little details in the costume. Look at the creases in the fabric.
Points Against
  • I guess the shoes. I was hoping for something a little bit more.
Recommendation: Going to give this one a Hot Buy, as it is far too fun for the average buy.

DC Dynamics: Green Lantern

The fifth in a six part series. Need to figure out who is the next one in the series.

Distributor DC Direct
Designed By Tim Bruckner
Sculpted By Tim Bruckner
Type Statue
Size 13" H
Release Sept 29 2010
Price $195.00

Zimm's Two Cents
I've been dying for a good Green Lantern Statue. This one looks great, but after Robert's two cents from the last one, I can only perceive it as a bust.

With that said....

Points in Favor
  • Great Colors.
  • Love the flame/energy going from the 'base' into his fist.
  • Like the clean sculpting in the body and face.
  • I like the green energy/flames on this one.
Points Against
  • Paint between the hair and forehead.
Recommendation: Neutral. I like pieces of it, but I only see a bust.

Robert's Two Cents
It's a bust. This one is the closest to pull off what I think they're doing.

Points in Favor
  • The green flame effect is the best effect usage in this series. Aquaman's water may be a close second.
  • It's the classic Hal Jordan costume., I'm wrong it's not.
Points Against
  • His hair isn't quite right. I miss the grey at his temples.
  • Facial expression is a bit off.
  • The pose seems a bit awkward, especially if we're supposed to think there are legs under the green flam effects.
  • I'm not sure I like the way the green energy effect is working around his right hand.
Recommendation:Pass . Not crazy about it. There have been other GL pieces I've liked better and I'm pretty sure there will be others I will like more in the future.

Heroes of the DC Universe: Sinestro

Now that he is helping save the universe, I would have to agree that he is a "Hero of the DC Universe."

Distributor DC Direct
Designed By Gary Frank
Sculpted By Jean St. Jean
Type Bust
Size 5.75" H
Release Sept 22 2010
Price $70

Zimm's Two Cents
This one makes me want to hunt down the Hal Jordan Bust, so that I can have the two of these together.

Points in Favor
  • The base is totally rockin! And it matches Hal's too.
  • The level of detail. From his costume, to his sneer, to his hands and teeth. I love the little pieces.
  • Love the Colors. DC doesn't attempt to shade anything, they just throw it at you.
Points Against
  • The tips of the energy on the top of the lantern. How insignificent is that anyway.
Recommendation: Hot Buy....BUT - if you get this one, you need the Hal Jordan one. I like this one, and I tend to be tough on DC Direct.

Robert's Two Cents
I'm not crazy about the handling of Green Lantern in the recent revival. The resurrection and apparent attempt to make Sinestro a bit of a sympathetic character doesn't work for me. The one thing I feel they did right is his costume. I love the new Sinestro Corps costume. Plus Sinestro is the one person who single-handedly nearly brought the GL Corps down to their knees twice. Yes, twice. How would they compete with an entire corps of people like Sinestro?

Points in Favor
  • The base is great.
  • They did a great job on his costume.
Points Against
  • The pose. If you're looking for definitive Sinestro, this isn't the pose you put him in. He should be standing upright and sneering.
  • Forehead is all wrong.
Recommendation: Pass There has to be a better Sinestro piece than this one. I know Zimm is going to think I'm just contradicting him, but I'm not. Sinestro is one of my all time favorite DC villains and I just think he deserves a more accurate depiction.

One additional note on the costume: While I do love the costume, I think I just realized something. His costume basically looks like an updated version of Black Adam's costume. I need to think on that more.

Green Lantern 1:2 Scale Bust

Happy Holidays! Another quick review before the Holiday weekend goes into full swing.

Licensed By
DC Direct
Manufactured by Kotobukiya
Sculpted By Jordu Schell
Type 1:2 Scale Bust
Size 13"H x 11"W x 6"D
Ship Date August 2010
Retail Cost $295.00

Zimm's Two Cents
With all of the popularity around Blackest Night, this one should not have surprised me, but it did. I guess it is because I kind-of / sort-of liked it. Initial pass caught my eye. Scrutiny drives me away.

Points in Favor
  • While I am not 100% certain about it, I do like the general look of the fabric.
  • They captured Hal Jordan's personality in the piece. From the raised eyebrow to the slight grin.
  • The Mask is cool.
Points Against
  • The Hair. From the front view, it just doesn't take.
  • The skin tone looks more like make-up then skin tone.
Recommendation: Neutral. While I was initially leaning toward a Pass, I realized that if you are a die-hard Green Lantern fan that this would not be a bad piece for you. If you aren't, you might want to look elsewhere.

Uni-Formz: Green Lantern - Blue Lantern

I'm actually enjoying this series; however, I don't remember them promoting a Blue Lantern? In fact, when I went back to look at Robert's post earlier this year, it was "Power Glow" figure.

Manufacturer DC Direct
Designed & Sculpted by Monster 5
Dimensions Over 8" tall
Articulation 12 Points
Type Vinyl Figure
Edition Size Limited Unknown
Release Date December 16, 2009
Retail Price $99.99

Zimm's Two Cents
I actually prefer the Blue Lantern over the Power Glow version. It fits with the recent 'Blackest Night' storyline; however, I would almost ask that they start putting out other ringed characters as well, which would take away from the 3-set pieces that they have been creating.

Recommendation: Great Buy.

Robert's Two Cents
I like it, but it's $100. There's lots better I can do with $100. Plus, is Hal a Blue Lantern now?

Recommendation: Neutral.

Green Lantern Legacies - Part 2 & 3

This multi-part statue came out in 3 different releases, with a total of 4 different parts. Part 2 featured Kyle Rayner and the Original Manhunter, while part 3 includes Guy Gardner and John Stewart. If you purchased all 3 different packages, you were able to build the forth part of the statue: Alan Scott.

Produced by DC Direct
Sculpted by Mike Locascio
Entire Multi-Part Statue 16"H x 10.5"w x 11.75"
Type Statue
Ship Date June 2010
Retail Price/package $195.00

Zimm's Two Cents
Though I have been drooling all over the Blackest Night series and would love to add a Green Lantern to my collection, this set did not hit the mark.

Points in Favor
  • It includes all of the different Lanterns and a few supporting characters.
  • Good colors, but then again the black and green really pop.
  • I like the different Lanterns.
Points Against
  • Characters are a tad bit stiff and not all of the poses look natural.
  • Looks more like toy figures then a sculpture.
  • Compared to some of the other statues out there, this one does not seem to have the same level of quality or detail as the others.
Recommendation: I'm sticking with my Pass. DC Direct has some other great statues, and you should hold out for a good Lantern too.

Blue Beetle.....or is it Blackest Beetle?

By now, everyone knows that I am all over the Blackest Night series, and I knew that it was only a matter of time before the Blue Beetle made his deadly return. So, for the Friday before Halloween, I give you the "Blackest Beetle" or "Zombie Beetle".

Have a great day.

Green Lantern: Sinestro vs. Mongul

With everything that has happened in Blackest Night, let us not forget Mongul, or the fact that he has slowly been taken yellow rings away from the Sinestro Corps. Is this but a foreshadow of things to come? Will Mongul eventually control the yellow rings, as Sinestro returns to being a Green Lantern?

To Robert's previous point: Can they not forgive Sinestro, if they have forgiven Hal for everything that he as done?

Lots of theories, but at the very least, this is another great piece of the Blackest Night story line. Now - let the smackdown begin! Green Lantern Issue #46

Blackest Night: Glimpse of Light

Okay, I made the title up, BUT I'm going to go pick up my comics today. Robert and I are working on some changes to the site(s), and I have a host of other little things that need to be accomplished between now and then. With that said, what do you think of this cover? I was able to read some of the pieces from the story, and wahoo! It truly is going to be all of the Lanterns trying to get along to take out the Black Lanterns. I think the Red Lanterns have a strong advantage, as the Black Lanterns are after the others hears.

Seriously, you need to pick up this series.

Saturday, September 12, 2009

Honey! I'm Home!

It's Saturday, and my internet access was down all day yesterday. I have to pull all of the harvest and Halloween decorations out of the attic, I have to pick up my comics, and I still need to find some time to get a few other things done. Yet, with all of that going on, I still can't wait to read how the Teen Titans deal with the Blackest Night.

Somethings are better left alone.

I have heard a few other people mention this as well, so I don't mind repeating it.

Whose idea was it to give a bunch of Zombie's power rings? WHO?!

Green Lantern - Part 1: Hal Jordan

Green Lantern - Part 1
Legacies Multi-Part Statue: Hall Jordan & Guardians of the Universe
DC Direct offers yet another 4 piece set of statues that build into one overall larger statue. This series, as you can see, is focused on the Green Lanterns. While there are 4 pieces, the collector will need to buy 3 different pieces to buid the entire statue and include Alan Scott.

Produced By DC Direct
Sculpted By Mike Locasio
Type Porcelain Statue
Size 9"H x 8.5"w x 11.75"d
Ship April 2010
Price $195.00

Zimm's Two Cents
As you have probably noticed, my current favorite series is the Green Lantern and Blackest Night titles. I have never been a Green Lantern fan; however, after the Sinestro Wars and now with the Blackest Night, I can not get the comics soon enough. Also - I have trying to figure out which Green Lantern graphic novels I need. Suggestions?

Points in Favor
  • I like the colors.
  • While you can still see the stick holding them up, The Guardians of the Galaxy Universe look good. I like that they are floating.
  • There are a lot of little details showing up in this piece. Guardian's faces and hands.
Points Against
  • Hal's face looks off. The hair and expression just don't seem right.
  • I feel like if you buy this piece, you HAVE to buy the other pieces - which I am not that thrilled about.
Recommendation: Neutral. Okay, if you have been a Green Lantern fan for life, you will probably be all over this collection. However, after looking at some of the other pieces, I think that some of the details may be lacking. So, I am still waiting on Green Lantern statue that I have to add to the collection.

Robert's Two Cents
I'm not currently reading Green Lantern, but I've always been a fan of Hal Jordan. One of my first comics was a reprint of Hal Jordan's origin.

Points in Favor
  • Green Lantern looks good.
  • The Guardians look good too. I'm not a fan of the look of the ponytail on the one on the left.
  • The post and most of the sculpt are great.
Points Against
  • The hair is way off. Not their fault, but I miss the grey at the temples look.
  • I don't like this version of the Green Lantern costume. I like Hal's traditional costume or the one John Stewart has worn since the early nineties.
  • The face is a bit off, but that frequently happens with rendering 2D characters in 3D.
Recommendation:Buy . I like the basic piece. The entire series intrigues me. There are just enough minor things to throw me off on it, but I'm still going to give it a buy.
