Bowen Designs: Psycho-Man Bust

Hmmmm. Not quite certain how exciting this one is going to be.

Manufacturer Bowen Designs
Sculptor Avinash Hegde
Type Mini-Bust
Size Over 8"H
Release June 2010
Price $60.00

Zimm's Two Cents
I've never really been hooked on the Fantastic Four series, so I don't really know that much that I could tell you about the Psycho-Man.

Points in Favor
  • Good Sculpt. While it is a digital sculpt, the little things are what make most of these statues.
Points Against
  • Boring base.
  • I would prefer brighter colors on this one. This is one of the times that the 'splotchy' paint jobs really distract from the character.
Recommendation: Pass. Unless you love the Fantastic Four, this one really doesn't seem that big of a 'must have.'

Nope, not that exciting.

Knights of the Old Republic

Sinking farther into my graphic novel addiction, I gave in this afternoon and spent my latest Border’s coupon on Dark Horse Comic’s Knights of the Old Republic: Commencement—passing over the newest installment of Fables.

Knights’ premise is what sold me. Set thousands of years before Star Wars: A New Hope the series chronicles the struggles of a young, falsely accused padawan. The graphic novel offered me the opportunity to delve farther into the Empire, the Republic. I was intrigued. At least for the first page.

The writing flounders—“Hang on a moment. My robe’s stuck.” What? “Hang on a moment”? The guy’s not putting his shoes on for a run to Mickey D’s. He’s a padawan surrounded by war, corruption, Sith, and other bad stuff. Flat and incongruous, the dialogue feels like one liners pulled from a bad Syfy movie. Climbing aboard a ship, a Jedi tells the foolish padawan, “Well, the war awaits. See you around, Zayne.” Uh, yeah. The exchanges stumble back and forth between awkward slang and misplaced formality.

Ching and Foreman’s artwork is beautiful; Atiyeh’s coloring is lush and vibrant. Their work combines to create an unimaginative knock-off of Lucas’s films. The same characters with the same robots occupy the same positions. Supposedly, the events are set millennia before A New Hope—not the weekend before. Has the galaxy’s technology been at a standstill for 4,000 years? How did the senator of this ancient world get a hold of Luke’s landspeeder?

Knights was a boring, tedious disappoint. I finished the thing, though. (I owed it to my coupon. I owed it to Fables.) The long list of titles in the back of Knights tempts me, calling to me with promises of past Sith machinations—not the least of which, I suspect, is pawning off poorly executed graphic novels to unsuspecting geeks.

The Dark Knight Returns

A friend convinced me to try my hand at this—at reviewing graphic novels. I am new to graphic novels—having spent my life reading and studying works of dead white males. With that in mind, I begin with a review that is two decades late.

At that friend’s insistence, I started with Watchmen and quickly put it down. The intense, self-absorbed nihilism was old school—in this case literally. (Try Crane, Norris, Hammett.) Sandman also failed to capture and maintain my attention. The brooding, dark reflections on death seemed a repetitive offshoot of Poe and Melville—minus the levity.

Then I stumbled onto The Dark Knight. I had entered into the world. I was captivated.

Dated. It is most definitely dated, and I have the sneaking suspicion that is part of its draw. Perhaps being a child of the Cold War Era, I feel the resonance of the uncertainties of a world resigned to its annihilation. The battered ideologies of Batman and Bruce Wayne reflect dark undercurrents hidden by masks and good intentions. The topographies of troubled moralities emerge throughout the course of the graphic novel. The characters struggle to navigate these ethical landscapes. But they are not heading some sort of Frodo-like, apocalyptic showdown between good and evil, a showdown in which good triumphs over evil battering it into submission. That’s Superman’s job. (And notice, his battles have been resigned to the twice removed reality of comic book news reports.)

Batman (at least Frank Miller’s Batman) never destroys the evil in him or the world. Unlike Obi Wan and Yoda, Batman—to shift gears and throw in a comparison—seems to know that he must embrace his shadow; he must live with his hidden darkness. Purging himself and his society of all that is distasteful is a form of repression. When he fully understand Anakin’s betrayal, Obi Wan can only whine something along the lines of “You were supposed to bring balance to the force.” He might as well have cried, “It’s not fair.”

The struggle with the dark is not just a matter of agreeing to disagree. Save that for Dr. Phil. This shadow stuff is a matter of climbing into the muck and rolling around with the darkness, cheating it of its birthright, its place. Hitting it in the knee when it’s not looking. Like Luke Skywalker, Miller’s Batman must learn or relearn how to embrace and accept the dark forces in him and his world. And Batman does. Watching him do so is the glory of the text.

Vibrant, vivacious, and daring, he grapples with the nihilism others can only point at, and he contextualizes it—or in his milieu, he puts it in a headlock. And by doing so, Batman averts Armageddon, sidesteps pathos, and transcends the comic book. He becomes and remains human.

Mullet? They had to do the one with the mullet? Especially with such a puffy front.

Points in Favor
  • Face. For some reason, I really like Alex's take on this one. Good job.
  • Colors - while it still has the 'blotchy' point, I do like the different shades of blue, the tan belt, and skin.
  • Little hints of detail - eyebrows, belt.
Points Against
  • Right wrist looks off.
  • Plain base.
Recommendation: I'm 50/50 on this one. At first glance, I wanted to Buy it. After looking it over, I'm not quite sure. It looks to be a good buy, I'm just not sure. Neutral.

Points Against

  • Costume Makes me think of Witchblade character.
  • A little adult for the line of characters.

Recommendation: Still like the series, but this one is a Pass for me.

More then anything, I think this one truly catches the essence of a teenager. Green Powered MP3 Player - Too Cool!

Points In Favor
  • Colors. The different colors of green, the sharp blacks, and the hint of red in her mouth.
  • The headphones. I had to provide the shot that showed how cool they really are.
  • the detail in the Costume. Did you notice the lanterns throughout.
  • Little details in the costume. Look at the creases in the fabric.
Points Against
  • I guess the shoes. I was hoping for something a little bit more.
Recommendation: Going to give this one a Hot Buy, as it is far too fun for the average buy.

What the.....Giant Guitar Mickey

I really didn't realize that this was a "GIANT" Guitar Mickey until I saw the sticker price, and then I looked at the size of it. OMG! $3499.99. Yes, I have been enjoying the Medicom Toy line of Disney characters, but I may have to win the lotto to get this one.

And then I would need a special room dedicated to stuff I don't mind being this big.....Oh, I forgot to tell you. He is 40" tall! Egads!

Still kindof cool though.

Sideshow Collectibles - Bullseye

I remember when Bullseye was first introduced, and from the very first story, I thought that he had all of the markings of a classic character. Like all characters, they have changed his personality from time to time, but overall - he remains a classic. He has all of the basics needed for a character to remember - costume, ability, and history. That's my way of saying that I like him as a villain.

  • As always with the Sideshow Statues, detail, detail, detail. Look at the throwing knives.
  • Coloring - Simple and on point.
  • Usually where they lose me is with the face - not here. Very Nice.
  • Great pose for the character.
Points Against
  • Only the base. Simple, but still on point.
Recommendation: I have to give this one the thumbs up on a Hot Buy. He will definitely look good staring down at you or any other statues that you might have.

WOW!

Points In Favor
  • Belt is wired so that you can customize it.
  • Hair looks good.
  • Did they actually put reflections in the boots?! cool.
  • Different pose from the standard frontal positions. She looks like she is about to be hit by something.....but isn't one of the reflections cap?
  • Colors - Clean nice paint job.
Points Against
  • Face. I want more of a "Just Try It" type of look. Or, a "I am definitely going to kick your ass."
Recommendation: Buy. Sideshow did a good job on this one. Only the price gives me real pause on this one. Sideshow needs to put out some affordable marvel mini-busts.

Bowen Designs: Warriors Three

Another bust pack! The Kucharak Brothers put out some rockin Guardians of the Galaxy recently, and now Mike has put out the Warriors Three.

Distributor Bowen Designs
Sculpted By Mike Cusanelli
Type Busts
Size
Hogun - 6.75"
Fandral - 7.5"
Volstagg - Over 10"
Release May 2010
Price $195.00

Zimm's Two Cents
With everything that is going on with Thor, these are some prominent characters, but did it really take Volstagg this long to discover hamburgers? Anyway.

One more side note, before I get started, Bowen Designs puts out some incredible stuff, and when I give my two cents, that is all they are - my two cents. It is one of the reasons that I enjoy Robert giving his two cents and hearing from you. Don't be afraid to speak up and correct us. That is what makes all of this more enjoyable.

Points In Favor
  • Three pack means that you get them all at once. Saves time.
  • Maintained the traditional garb and look of the characters.
  • Each base is a tad bit different.
  • Little pieces of detail show up here and there - especially on Hogun.
Points Against
  • Not that keen on Fandral's face. Do kids these day even know Errol Flynn?
  • Again - Fandral's sword. Hmmmmmm.
Recommendation: Neutral on this one. I like, but I don't like. Good set, but not necessarily for me.

Bowen Designs: Pyro Bust

Sorry for the delay in posts and the scattered shot approach as of late, but I have been buried with work and personal factors. So - here we go.

Distributor Bowen Designs
Sculpted By Joseph Menna
Type Busts
Size 11" H
Release May 2010
Price $75.00

Zimm's Two Cents
Remember, I tend to enjoy the villain statues/busts more, so I might be slightly biased. However, this is still a great piece.

Points In Favor
  • Flames add an additional 3.5" in height. Without the flames, the statue is only 7.5" tall.
  • Love the colors. Clean - don't see much of Bowen smudging.
  • I like Menna's work. The statue is nice.
  • The flames - too cool. The way that it holds the bust up are too cool. You will have to head over to Bowen designs to take a look.
Points Against
  • The hair.....no, I like that. Hmmmmm. I like that too. Guess I don't have one.
Recommendation: Simple - Hot Buy. I will be ordering this one.

Happy 3rd Birthday, Alex!

OK! Another year and another shot at misusing this blog to wish my son a Happy Birthday. He's three today.

This year, for a change, I'm not completely off topic. He had a Spider-Man themed birthday party.

Here are a few pictures of his cake:

Here's a picture of the birthday boy.

Again, Happy Birthday, Alex!
